Averages of observables on Gamow states

Abstract

We propose a formulation of Gamow states, which is the part of unstable quantum states that decays exponentially, with two advantages in relation with the usual formulation of the same concept using Gamow vectors. The first advantage is that this formulation shows that Gamow states cannot be pure states, so that they may have a non-zero entropy. The second is thepossibility of correctly defining averages of observables on Gamow states.

An Algebraic Model for Quantum Unstable States

Sebastián Fortín, Manuel Gadella, Federico Holik +2 more

In this review, we present a rigorous construction of an algebraic method for quantum unstable states, also called Gamow states. A traditional picture associates these states to vectors states called Gamow vectors. However, this has some difficulties. In particular, there is no consistent definition of mean values of observables on Gamow vectors. In this work, we present Gamow states as functionals on algebras in a consistent way. We show that Gamow states are not pure states, in spite of their representation as Gamow vectors. We propose a possible way out to the construction of averages of observables on Gamow states. The formalism is intended to be presented with sufficient mathematical rigor.

Mathematical Models for Unstable Quantum Systems and Gamow States

Manuel Gadella, Sebastián Fortín, Juan Pablo Jorge +1 more

We review some results in the theory of non-relativistic quantum unstable systems. We account for the most important definitions of quantum resonances that we identify with unstable quantum systems. Then, we recall the properties and construction of Gamow states as vectors in some extensions of Hilbert spaces, called Rigged Hilbert Spaces. Gamow states account for the purely exponential decaying part of a resonance; the experimental exponential decay for long periods of time physically characterizes a resonance. We briefly discuss one of the most usual models for resonances: the Friedrichs model. Using an algebraic formalism for states and observables, we show that Gamow states cannot be pure states or mixtures from a standard view point. We discuss some additional properties of Gamow states, such as the possibility of obtaining mean values of certain observables on Gamow states. A modification of the time evolution law for the linear space spanned by Gamow shows that some non-commuting observables on this space become commuting for large values of time. We apply Gamow states for a possible explanation of the Loschmidt echo.

Gamow vectors and decaying states

Arno Böhm, Manuel Gadella, G. B. Mainland

Gamow vectors are generalized eigenvectors of the Hamiltonian with complex eigenvalues that describe exponentially decaying (or growing) states. The energy wavefunctions corresponding to Gamow vectors have a pole immediately below (or above) the real axis in the complex energy plane. Although complex energy values were introduced more than half a century ago for the theory of alpha decay, they have become disreputable and have been banished from quantum mechanics textbooks because of mathematical problems and incorrect physical interpretation. Developments in modern mathematics have now provided a mathematical foundation that has led to the correct physical interpretation. In this article, energy eigenvectors with complex eigenvalues are first introduced by explicitly considering a specific simple decaying system. Then, an elementary account of the properties of Gamow vectors is given. The results from the decaying system provide a motivation for the introduction of Gamow vectors and some of the background information needed to understand their properties.

The definition of entropy for quantum unstable systems: a view-point based on the properties of Gamow states

Osvaldo Civitarese, Gadella Urquiza, Manuel

In this paper, we review the concept of entropy in connection with the description of quantum unstable systems. We revise the conventional definition of entropy due to Boltzmann and extend it so as to include the presence of complex-energy states. After introducing a generalized basis of states which includes resonances, and working with amplitudes instead of probabilities, we~found an expression for the entropy which exhibits real and imaginary components. We discuss the meaning of the imaginary part of the entropy on the basis of the similarities existing between thermal and time evolutions.

Gamow functionals on operator algebras

Mario Castagnino, Manuel Gadella, R. Id Betán +1 more

We obtain the precise form of two Gamow functionals representing the exponentially decaying part of a quantum resonance and its mirror image that grows exponentially, as a linear, positive and continuous functional on an algebra containing observables. These functionals do not admit normalization and, with an appropriate choice of the algebra, are time reversal of each other.
