Abstract

We experimentally demonstrate a scheme for the preparation of high-dimensional hyperentangled photon pairs with path degree of freedom (DOF) and orbital-angular-momentum (OAM) DOF using beam displacer (BD) interferometers from a warm atomic ensemble. A strong Gaussian pump beam of fixed frequency passes through the BD to produce a superposition state of two paths. The biphoton state is generated from two parallel spontaneous four-wave mixing processes in the $^{85}\mathrm{Rb}$ vapor cell. We successfully detect the path entanglement, two-dimensional OAM entanglement, and three-dimensional OAM entanglement by selecting the appropriate measurement. Due to the advantages of the simplicity of our interaction system and high dimensionality of the narrowband hyperentangled photons we generated, such hyperentangled source from an atomic ensemble can be utilized to realize high-dimensional multiple-DOF quantum memory and quantum communication in the future.

Violation of high-dimensional Bell inequality using narrowband orbital-angular-momentum entanglement from warm atomic vapor

Yuan Ren, Xutong Wang, Yanbo Lou +3 more

Narrowband biphotons from an atomic ensemble are an extraordinary source for quantum information science. The generation of biphotons in the warm atomic system has many applicable prospects for its simplicity, stability, and compactness. In this article we experimentally demonstrate the generation of biphotons from the spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM) process in a warm rubidium vapor cell. By performing high-dimensional Bell-type measurements and mutually unbiased measurements, we maximally obtain a three-dimensional orbital-angular-momentum discrete-variable (DV) entangled state. The violation of high-dimensional Bell inequalities shows the great potential of warm atomic systems in generating DV high-dimensional entanglement. Such narrowband photon pairs may find applications in quantum-memory-based quantum communication networks. Through integration with the continuous-variable (CV) entanglement already existing in the same SFWM platform, our results here pave the way to construct atomic-ensemble-based DV-CV hybrid quantum information protocols.

Generation of hyper-entangled photons in a hot atomic vapor

Chengyuan Wang, Chung-Hyun Lee, Yosep Kim +1 more

A source of hyper-entangled photons plays a vital role in quantum information processing, owing to its high information capacity. In this Letter, we demonstrate a convenient method to generate polarization and orbital angular momentum (OAM) hyper-entangled photon pairs via spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM) in a hot 87 R b atomic vapor. The polarization entanglement is achieved by coherently combining two SFWM paths with the aid of two beam displacers that constitute a phase self-stabilized interferometer, and OAM entanglement is realized by taking advantage of the OAM conservation condition during the SFWM process. Our hyper-entangled biphoton source possesses high brightness and high nonclassicality and may have broad applications in atom–photon-interaction-based quantum networks.

Direct Generation of Narrow-band Hyperentangled Photons

Tianming Zhao, Yong Sup Ihn, Yoon-Ho Kim

In quantum communication and photonic quantum information processing, the requirement of quantum repeaters and quantum memory often imposes a strict bandwidth prerequisite for the entangled photons. At the same time, there is ever more increasing demand for entangling more degrees of freedom, i.e., hyperentanglement, for a photon pair. In this Letter, we report the direct generation of narrow-band orbital angular momentum (OAM) and polarization hyperentangled photons from cold atoms. The narrow-band photon pair is naturally entangled in polarization and OAM, in addition to time-frequency, degrees of freedom due to spin and orbital angular momentum conservation conditions in the spontaneous four-wave mixing process in a cold atom ensemble. The narrow-band hyperentangled photon pair source reported here is expected to play important roles in quantum memory-based long-distance quantum communication.

Generation of subnatural-linewidth orbital angular momentum entangled biphotons using a single driving laser in hot atoms

Jiaheng Ma, Chengyuan Wang, Bingbing Li +7 more

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) entangled photon pairs with narrow bandwidths play a crucial role in the interaction of light and quantum states of matter. In this article, we demonstrate an approach for generating OAM entangled photon pairs with a narrow bandwidth by using a single driving beam in a 85 Rb atomic vapor cell. This single driving beam is able to simultaneously couple two atomic transitions and directly generate OAM entangled biphotons by leveraging the OAM conservation law through the spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM) process. The photon pairs exhibit a maximum cross-correlation function value of 27.7 and a linewidth of 4 MHz. The OAM entanglement is confirmed through quantum state tomography, revealing a fidelity of 95.7% and a concurrence of 0.926 when compared to the maximally entangled state. Our scheme is notably simpler than previously proposed schemes and represents the first demonstration of generating subnatural-linewidth entangled photon pairs in hot atomic systems.

Entanglement of the orbital angular momentum states of the photon pairs generated in a hot atomic ensemble

Qunfeng Chen, Bao‐Sen Shi, Yong-Sheng Zhang +1 more

In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate that the photon pairs generated via spontaneous four-wave mixing in a hot atomic ensemble are in entangled orbital angular momentum (OAM) states. The density matrix of the OAM states of the photon pair is reconstructed, from which the fidelity to the maximal entangled state and the concurrence are estimated to be about 0.89 and 0.81, respectively. The experimental result also suggests the existence of the entanglement concerned with spatial degrees of freedom between the hot atomic ensemble and the Stokes photon.

Studies of Light Generation with Four-Wave Mixing in a Cold Atomic Ensemble

Andrew R. Ferdinand

Correlated light generated from atomic ensembles can have a central role in prominent quantum information protocols, such as long-distance quantum communication. Here we present our studies on three topics involving the generation of correlated light with four-wave mixing (FWM) in a cold atomic ensemble for applications in quantum communications with high capacity. We experimentally investigate the generation of light with seeded FWM in cold cesium atoms and the time correlations of photon pairs generated with spontaneous FWM. We theoretically investigate the correlations in orbital angular momentum of photon pairs generated with spontaneous FWM for a range of experimental geometries. These studies represent foundational work toward the control and measurement of high-dimensional entanglement in the orbital angular momentum degree of freedom photon pairs for use in high-dimensional quantum communication.
