Abstract

In this paper, we study the spin dynamics of spin-orbit-coupled (SOC) spin-2 Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs) with dipole–dipole interaction (DDI). Numerical results are obtained by solving the nonlocal Gross–Pitaevskii equation. Our discussions are divided into two parts. In the absence of DDI, the spin dynamics presents periodic oscillation. Increasing the magnetization makes the amplitude increase, and increasing SOC strength accelerates the spin dynamics and thus changes the period. Nevertheless, in the presence of DDI, the periodicity oscillation of spin dynamics is broken. The thermalization time decreases with the increase of magnetization for fixed SOC strength. In addition, the thermalization time becomes zero with strong SOC strength when magnetization is fixed. We also show the formation of domain in density profile when DDI is considered. Moreover, the components m = 2 and m = −2 exchange their location with a little increase of SOC strength. This is a specific reflection of the competition between the SOC and DDI.

Effects of dipolar interaction on vortex formation in spin-orbit coupled spin-1 rotating condensates

Qiang Zhao, Hongjing Bi

In this paper, we study the vortex formation of spin-orbit coupled (SOC) spin-1 dipolar Bose–Einstein condensates by numerically solving the Gross–Pitaevskii equation. We focus the effects of dipole–dipole interaction (DDI) on vortex structures and dynamics behavior. We find that the symmetry of density profiles in vortex lattice formation process and time evolution of the angular momentum is broken in the presence of DDI. This is due to the symmetry breaking of anisotropy DDI. Also, the total angular momentum decreases with increasing the relative dipole strength. However, it is shown that increasing SOC strength can improve the rotation efficiency. This result reflects the SOC dominates the DDI.

Density Structure in Two-Component Spin-Orbit-Coupled Dipolar Ultracold Bose Gas

In this paper, we consider the ground state properties of a spin-orbit coupled binary Bose-Einstein condensates with dipole-dipole interaction. Our results are obtained by numerically solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equation in the mean field. It is shown that the density structures are greatly affected by spin-orbit coupled strength and dipole strength. With the increase of spin-orbit coupled strength, we find that a stripe phase and phase separation of two components appear, and the number of stripes increases. In addition, concentric circularity stripes with spatial symmetry appear. We also verify that the phase separation can be broken as the dipole strength increases. However, the stripe phase is still kept in this process. As a result, there are no regions of zero density inside the cloud and the nonfragmented density BEC is exhibited. Also, the critical dipole strength decreases with increasing the SOC strength for the non-fragmented state. This result reflects a competition in which the spin-orbit coupling dominates the dipole-dipole interaction.

Vortex generation in spin–orbit-coupled spin-1 dipolar Bose atomic gases

Chen-Yang Wang, Li-Hao Zhang, Shi-Bo Wang +3 more

In this paper, we investigate vortex formation in spin–orbit-coupled (SOC) spin-1 dipolar Bose–Einstein condensates. We focus on the differences in time evolution of several physical quantities such as vorticity profiles, integrated vorticity, angular momentum, and compressible and incompressible kinetic energy. Numerical results show that the three components exhibit rich dynamical behaviors, depending on the competition between SOC and dipole–dipole interactions. Additionally, we also compare different rotation frequencies and contact interactions, showing that they play a significant role in these physical quantities.

Spinor condensate in spin–orbit coupled Bose gases with inhomogeneous magnetic field

Qiang Zhao, Hongjing Bi, Xiao-Meng Yang +1 more

In this paper, we study the dynamic properties of spin–orbit coupling (SOC) spin-1 antiferromagnetic Bose–Einstein condensates with inhomogeneous external magnetic field by numerical simulations of the multicomponent Gross–Pitaevskii equation. Our results show that the spin dynamics process is greatly affected by SOC when the system is in the absence of magnetic field. The periodicity of spin exchange dynamics disappears and the population of thermal clouds for [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] gradually increases and decreases and then reaches a steady value. In this case, a stable stripe phase emerges for three-component wavefunction. Nevertheless, the spin dynamics process becomes complex in the presence of magnetic field, depending on the competition between magnetic field and SOC. The influences of SOC are masked by the relatively strong magnetic field and the density structures are similar to the case of without or weak magnetic field.

Collective dynamics of a spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate

Fang-Qi Hu, Jianjun Wang, Zi-Fa Yu +2 more

We study the collective dynamics of the spin-orbit coupled two pseudospin components of a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a quasi-one-dimensional harmonic potential, by using variational and directly numerical approach of binary mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii equations. The results show that, because of strong coupling of spin-orbit coupling (SOC), Rabi coupling, and atomic interaction, the collective dynamics of the system behave as complex characters. When the Rabi coupling is absent, the density profiles of the system preserve the Gauss type and the wave packets do harmonic oscillations. The amplitude of the collective oscillations increases with SOC. Furthermore, when the SOC strength increases, the dipole oscillations of the two pseudospin components undergo a transition from in-phase to out-of-phase oscillations. When the Rabi coupling present, there will exist a critical value of SOC strength (which depends on the Rabi coupling and atomic interaction). If the SOC strength is less than this critical value, the density profiles of the system can preserve the Gauss type and the wave packets do anharmonic (the frequency of dipole oscillations depends on SOC) oscillations synchronously (i.e., in-phase oscillations). However, if the SOC strength is larger than this critical value, the wave packets are dynamically fragmented and the stable dipole oscillations of the system can not exist. The collective dynamics of the system can be controlled by adjusting the atomic interaction, SOC, and Rabi-coupling strength.

Quantum phases and dynamics of dipolar spin-1 ferromagnetic Bose–Einstein condensates with spin–orbit coupling in a double-well potential

Jinguo Hu, Qingbo Wang, Xianghua Su +2 more

We consider a spin-1 ferromagnetic Bose–Einstein condensate with Rashba spin–orbit coupling (SOC) and dipole–dipole interaction (DDI) in a double-well potential. For the nonrotating case, the ground state of the system is obtained by using the imaginary time propagation method, and a ground-state phase diagram is given with respect to the SOC strength and the DDI strength. It is shown that the nonrotating system sustains rich exotic ground-state phases including the ox-horn phase with hidden vortices and antivortices, density droplet phase with vortex–antivortex pairs, modulated stripe phase with vortex–antivortex chains, checkerboard phase with visible vortex–antivortex chains and hidden vortex–antivortex pairs, and the triangular vortex–antivortex lattice phase. For the rotating case, the dynamics of the system is investigated by using a phenomenological dissipation model. The effects of SOC, DDI and rotation on the unique dynamic behaviors of the rotating system and the final steady-state structures are revealed and analyzed. In particular, the rotating system supports fascinating novel spin textures and skyrmion excitations, and experiences a series of topological structure transitions such as the transitions from an interlaced skyrmion–antiskyrmion lattice pair to a skyrmion–meron lattice pair and then to a meron lattice pair.
