Resonant ionization in slow-atom-Rydberg-atom collisions

R.K. Janev, A. A. Mihajlov

The process of ionization in slow-atom-Rydberg-atom collisions is investigated. A resonant energy exchange mechanism is considered responsible for the electron transition into the continuum. Both symmetrical and asymmetrical systems are considered. The ionization probabilities and cross sections for a number of Rydberg states in the colliding systems ${\mathrm{H}}^{*}(n)+\mathrm{H}$, ${\mathrm{Li}}^{*}(n)+\mathrm{Li}$, ${\mathrm{H}}^{*}(n)+\mathrm{Li}$ are calculated.

Group IIA Metastable Collision Complexes: Spectroscopy and Behavior in Intense Radiation Fields.

J. Cooper, J. Coutts

Abstract : This report describes work addressing the problems of collisional induced oscillator strength and energy transfer from metastable states in Group IIA alkaline earth metal atoms. The quenching of CA 3PJ states when perturbed by rare was atom collisions is investigated and such quenching is found to be negligable. The CA 1D2 state, however shows considerable collisional induced effects. Calculations have been performed which show that collision cross-sections for transfer of electronic excitation may be switched from the low values typically associated with off-resonant processes to the high values associated with resonant processes by using a strong laser to bring dressed states in one atom in and out of resonance with bare states in another atom. Keywords: Slow atomic collisions; Chemical lasers.

Redistribution of radiation by slowly perturbed atoms

Dietrich Voslamber

Redistribution of weak near-resonance radiation by perturbed two-state atoms is investigated without making the assumption of binary collisions. Perturbation of the atoms is assumed to occur as level fluctuations which obey a stationary stochastic process. The redistribution function is formally established in the atom's rest frame, neglecting lower-state broadening. The infinitesimally narrow Rayleigh component is shown to exist under a wide range of conditions, independently of the approximations made in binary-collision treatments. It is demonstrated that for slow perturbations of Rayleigh response function (intensity of the narrow component) is significantly different in shape from the absorption profile, even close to resonance. Slow perturbations also entail the occurrence of a broadened Rayleigh component in addition to the narrow Rayleigh component and the broadened fluorescence component. The redistribution function is evaluated for three special cases corresponding to small perturbations, very slow perturbations and perturbations obeying a Poisson step process.
