Quantum Trajectories: Metastability, Gauge Freedom and Weak Symmetries

Calum A. Brown

This thesis considers quantum systems which interact with their surrounding environment. Specifically we consider the underlying stochastic dynamics which arise from the back-action of measurements performed in the environment. These quantum trajectories can be tracked by continuously monitoring the environment, as is now possible in modern experiments. We consider phenomena understood at the average level of the system state density matrix, and explore these at this more information rich level. This is especially relevant for experimental setups and implementation of quantum technologies. Firstly, we consider how systems exhibiting metastability behave at the level of stochastic quantum trajectories. In doing so we make comparisons to classical theories of metastability, where trajectories exhibit fast relaxation into distinct phases and slow transitions between them. We also illustrate when this phenomenology does not hold, with instead the emergence of a slow manifold in the form of a decoherence free subspace. We also highlight the useful role that quantum reset processes can play in the analysis of stochastic quantum trajectories. The dynamics of the stochastic quantum trajectories depends on the choice of environmental measurements. There are many choices which leave the average dynamics unchanged, but give different statistical ensembles of quantum trajectories. This gauge freedom of the average dynamics is well known. We derive the analogous result at the level of quantum trajectory ensembles; giving the measurement protocols which leave the generator of the stochastic trajectory dynamics unchanged. We also extend this to include joint trajectories of conditional system states and their associated measurement records, either full records or coarse-grained. Using these results on gauge freedoms of quantum trajectories, we consider the conditions under which the trajectory dynamics exhibit a weak unitary symmetry. We then consider under what conditions the joint state of the system and environment exhibit symmetric dynamics, including under various levels of dephasing. We find that the joint dynamics always features a separable symmetry directly related to that of the quantum master equation, but for quantum trajectories the corresponding symmetry is present only if the counting measurement satisfies certain conditions.

Quantum Dynamics in Double-Well System with Polychromatic Perturbation Using Entangled Trajectory Molecular Dynamics Method

Fuming Xu, Lei Zhang, Yujun Zheng

We investigate quantum dynamics in a double-well system subject to time-dependent perturbation with some incommensurate frequencies using entangled trajectory molecular dynamics method. We first compare time evolution of energy of the driven system with two mode perturbation under classical dynamics with one under quantum dynamics, it is found that quantum dynamics obeys Ehrenfest's theorem and it shows our results obtain from entangled trajectory molecular dynamics method are correct and accurate. Quantum coherence suppresses trajectory which initial energy is higher than barrier to get over it, this process is named coherent destruction of tunneling (CDT). We show this interesting phenomenon through showing entangled trajectory and corresponding classical trajectory in phase space and discuss their energy fluctuation with time. Furthermore, we discuss quantum dynamics with different frequency mode perturbation from the perspective of autocorrelation evolution, classical chaos brings remarkable influence on quantum-mechanical phenomena.

Interacting trajectory representation of quantum dynamics: influence of boundary conditions on the tunneling decay of resonant states

L. Cruz Rodríguez, Llinersy Uranga-Piña, A. Martínez-Mesa +1 more

Abstract We perform quantum trajectory simulations of the decay dynamics of initially localized resonant states. Quantum dynamics is represented by a swarm of interacting trajectories which maps the originally quantum problem into the motion of an equivalent (higher-dimensional) classical system. We address two model problems, in which the decay of the initial resonance leads to either spatially confined or asymptotically free wave-packet dynamics, specifically on a double well potential and on a potential plain. The traditional choice of fixed boundary conditions in the interacting trajectory representation (ITR), set at infinity, is found to have a moderate influence on the accuracy of the ITR of quantum trajectory dynamics, for the motion on a double well potential, i.e. the results of the trajectory-based scheme are in good correspondence with those obtained via quantum wave-packet propagation up to several fundamental vibrational periods. On the other hand, standard boundary conditions have negligible effect on the interacting trajectory dynamics of a decaying shape resonance, whose predictions reproduce quantum mechanical results at long times.
