Abstract

We report on design and construction of a single-mode-fiber-based Mach-Zehnder interferometer system for measuring single photon indistinguishability from quantum dots emitting in visible spectrum (630±50 nm).The performance of the instrument was tested for its efficiency and usability in single-photon correlation measurements in a proposed experimental setup.DOI: 10.

Single photon interference between bidirectionally extracted photons originating from semiconductor quantum dots

Hirotaka Sasakura, Shunichi Muto, H. Kumano

We report the experimental demonstration of the single-photon interference of bidirectionally extracted photons from epitaxially grown semiconductor quantum dots. The quantum dots were directly connected to single-mode optical fibers. Single-photon nature between transmission and reflection directions was confirmed through detection of antibunching in second-order photon correlation measurements. A Mach–Zehnder interferometer that was naturally formed by introducing the two outputs into a 2 x 2-fiber coupler was used to perform first-order photon correlation measurements.

Single-photon interference based on a single InAs quantum dot

Li Yuan, Dou Xiu-Ming, Chang Xiu-Ying +3 more

Single InAs quantum dot (QD) sample is grown by molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE), and the photoluminescence (PL) from a single QD at 5 K is measured. By means of Hanbury-Brown and Twiss (HBT) setup, we measure the photon correlation of the PL which indicates that the PL of QD is single-photon emission. This single-photon source is used to demonstrate experimentally the single-photon interference via Mach-Zehnder (MZ) interferometer. In addition, the measured interference and fringe visibility are analyzed by changing the different linear polarization of the photon between two arms of MZ interferometer.

All-fiber three-path Mach–Zehnder interferometer

Gregor Weihs, Michael Reck, Harald Weinfurter +1 more

We report the realization of a three-path Mach-Zehnder interferometer using single-mode fibers and two integrated 3 x 3 fiber couplers. We observed enhanced phase sensitivity, as compared with two-path interferometers, with a visibility of the interference pattern of more than 97%. This interferometer has an analog in two-photon interferometry, and we believe it to be the first nontrivial example of N x N multiport interferometers.

Stable single-photon interference in a 1 km fiber-optic Mach–Zehnder interferometer with continuous phase adjustment

GUILHERME BARRETO XAVIER, Jean Pierre von der Weid

We experimentally demonstrate stable and user-adjustable single-photon interference in a 1 km long fiber-optic Mach-Zehnder interferometer, using an active phase control system with the feedback provided by a classical laser. We are able to continuously tune the single-photon phase difference between the interferometer arms using a phase modulator, which is synchronized with the gate window of the single-photon detectors. The phase control system employs a piezoelectric fiber stretcher to stabilize the phase drift in the interferometer. A single-photon net visibility of 0.97 is obtained, yielding future possibilities for experimental realizations of quantum repeaters in optical fibers and violation of Bell's inequalities using genuine energy-time entanglement.

All-Optical Fiber Hanbury Brown & Twiss Interferometer to study 1300 nm single photon emission of a metamorphic InAs Quantum Dot

Guillermo Muñoz‐Matutano, David Barrera, Carlos R. Fernández‐Pousa +6 more

New optical fiber based spectroscopic tools open the possibility to develop more robust and efficient characterization experiments. Spectral filtering and light reflection have been used to produce compact and versatile fiber based optical cavities and sensors. Moreover, these technologies would be also suitable to study N-photon correlations, where high collection efficiency and frequency tunability is desirable. We demonstrated single photon emission of a single quantum dot emitting at 1300 nm, using a Fiber Bragg Grating for wavelength filtering and InGaAs Avalanche Photodiodes operated in Geiger mode for single photon detection. As we do not observe any significant fine structure splitting for the neutral exciton transition within our spectral resolution (46 μeV), metamorphic QD single photon emission studied with our all-fiber Hanbury Brown &Twiss interferometer could lead to a more efficient analysis of entangled photon sources at telecom wavelength. This all-optical fiber scheme opens the door to new first and second order interferometers to study photon indistinguishability, entangled photon and photon cross correlation in the more interesting telecom wavelengths.

Introducing quantum mechanics with a two-mode Mach–Zehnder interferometer

Gauthier Rey, Renaud Mathevet, Sébastien Massenot +1 more

As an early teaching tool in QM, we propose to use a single-photon Mach–Zehnder interferometer. We demonstrate experimentally several properties associated with the concept of single photons in quantum optics and use them to introduce the quantum formalism and postulates in a more intuitive way.
