Abstract

We have demonstrated that the binding energy of a Rydberg atom is controlled as a function of a chirp of a microwave field through sequences of one-photon or a single multi-photon adiabatic rapid passage.

Population transfer by multiphoton adiabatic rapid passage

H. Maeda, J. H. Gurian, Thomas F. Gallagher

The population of atoms in Rydberg states is efficiently transferred with a change in principal quantum number $n$ of up to ten via multiphoton adiabatic rapid passage through a single multiphoton resonance using a frequency-chirped microwave pulse. A quantum-mechanical picture of multiphoton adiabatic rapid passage in a one-dimensional atom using a Floquet approach provides a good description of most, but not all, of the observed phenomena.

Coherent Population Transfer in an Atom by Multiphoton Adiabatic Rapid Passage

H. Maeda, J. H. Gurian, D.V.L. Norum +1 more

Coherent population transfer in an atom using a sequence of adiabatic rapid passages through single-photon resonances is well-known, but it requires that the frequency sweep match the changing frequencies of the atomic transitions. The same population transfer can be effected via a single multiphoton adiabatic rapid passage, which requires only a small frequency sweep, if it is possible to select the desired multiphoton transition from the many possible transitions. Here we report the observation of population transfer between Rydberg states by high order multiphoton adiabatic rapid passage.

Quantum Control of Entanglement Using Spin States in Rydberg Atoms

Elliot Pachniak, Yuri V. Rostovtsev, Svetlana Malinovskaya

Generation of W and GHZ states is demonstrated via two-photon adiabatic passage using overlapping chirped pulses and interplay of Rabi frequency, one-photon detuning, and Rydberg-Rydberg interactions. The entanglement is then transferred from atoms to radiation.

Coherent Control of Lithium Atom by Adiabatic Rapid Passage with Chirped Microwave Pulses

Lijuan Jiang, Xianzhou Zhang, Ma Huan-Qiang +2 more

Using the time-dependent multilevel approach and the B-spline technique, populations of Rydberg lithium atoms in chirped microwave pulses are demonstrated. Firstly the populations of two energy levels are controlled by the microwave pulse parameters. Secondly the atoms experience the consequence 70s-71p-72s-73p-74s in a microwave field using optimized microwave field parameters. It is shown that the coherent control of the population transfer in the microwave field from the initial to the target states can be accomplished by optimizing the microwave field parameters.
