Characteristics of Dressed Particles in the 1D Correlated Electron Systems

Abstract

Characteristic properties of the dressed particles, holon and spinon, in the one dimensional correlated electron systems are investigated by means of the exact solution of the Hubbard model. In particular, the nature of holon is clarified in detail in the system close to the Mott insulating phase. The dressed particles in magnetic fields are also formulated and discussed in terms of the bulk quantities. The exact results obtained for the correlation functions are mentioned in connection with the fractional charge of the dressed particles.

Elementary objects of the 1D Hubbard model

J. M. P. Carmelo

Exotic elementary objects such as "holons" and "spinons", which are widely used in descriptions of correlated electrons in reduced spatial dimensions, were introduced from analysis of the excitation branches of one-dimensional (1D) models. The 1D Hubbard model with effective nearest-neighbor hopping integral t and on-site repulsion U is a prominent example. In the last twenty years a large number of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments as well as electron energy-loss spectroscopic studies and high-resolution resonant inelastic X-ray experiments on several quasi-1D metals and quasi-1D Mott-Hubbard insulators have observed separate charge and spin spectral features, which have been identified with "holons" and "spinons". The elementary objects emerging within non-perturbative 1D correlated systems play now the same role in actual low-dimensional materials as Fermi-liquid quasiparticles in three-dimensional metals. The main goal of this paper is the review of representations of the 1D Hubbard model physics in terms of elementary objects whose configurations generate the energy eigenstates from the electron or hole vacuum. In addition, the relation to the holon and spinon representations is discussed and clarified.

Dressed particles in the Hubbard chain

Norio Kawakami, Ayao Okiji

Abstract The Hubbard model has been studied for a long time as a simplified model for electron correlation problems such as the metal-insulator transition, itinerant magnetism, and so on. Moreover, the discovery of high 7;, superconductors has again raised an important question about the strong correlation problem near the metal-insulator transition, including low-dimensional quantum fluctuations (Anderson 1987). In recent works, we have precisely studied various thermodynamic properties of the one-dimensional Hubbard model (Kawakami et al. 1989; Usuki et al. 1989) and clarified the underlying physics near the Mott insulator in terms of the dressed particles of the Bethe ansatz method (Kawakami and Okiji 1989a, b). In this brief report, we present the exact calculation for the dressed particles in the Hubbard chain near the Mott insulator.

One-Particle Spectral Properties of Mott-Hubbard Insulators

We use an exact holon and spinon Landau-liquid functional which describes the holon - spinon interactions at all scattering orders, to study correlation functions of integrable multicomponent many-particle problems showing both linear and non-linear energy bands. We consider specific cases when the dominant non-linear band terms are quadratic and apply our results to the evaluation of the 1D Hubbard model correlation functions beyond conformal-field theory.

Exact results of one-dimensional repulsive Hubbard model

Jiajia Luo, Han Pu, Xi‐Wen Guan

We present analytical results of fundamental properties of one-dimensional (1D) Hubbard model with a repulsive interaction, ranging from fractional excitations to universal thermodynamics, interaction-driven criticality, correlation functions, Contact susceptibilities and quantum cooling. Using the exact solutions of the Bethe Ansatz equations of the Hubbard model, we first rigorously calculate the gapless spin and charge excitations, exhibiting exotic features of fractionalized spinons and holons. Based on the analysis on the fractional charge and spin excitations, the spin-incoherent Luttinger liquid with only the charge propagation mode is elucidated by the asymptotic of the two-point correlation functions with the help of the conformal field theory. Near quadruple critical point, we then further analytically obtain the thermodynamical properties, dimensionless ratios and scaling functions near quantum phase transitions in terms of chemical potential, magnetic field and interaction. In particular, we determine additivity rules of spin and charge susceptibilities, and derive explicit forms of thermodynamics of spin-incoherent Luttinger liquid. Finally, in order to capture deeper insight into the Mott insulator and interaction driven criticality, we further study the double occupancy and its associated Contact and Contact susceptibilities through which an adiabatic cooling scheme upon the quantum criticality is introduced.

Interaction among particles with fractionalized quantum numbers in one dimensional samples

Bogdan Andrei Bernevig, Domenico Giuliano, R. B. Laughlin

The elementary excitations of strongly correlated one-dimensional electronic systems - spinons and holons - are discussed in an exact solution of the Haldane-Shastry and Kuramoto-Yokoyama model. We derive and exactly solve the equation of motion both for the two-spinon wavefunction and for the one-spinon, one-holon wavefunction. By solving the equations of motion we find the spinon-spinon and spinon-holon interaction to be a short-range attraction. The physical consequences of such an attraction on the spin-form factor and on the hole-spectral function are also worked out.
