Rabi Coupled Fermions in the BCS–BEC Crossover

Luca Dell’Anna, Federico De Bettin, Luca Salasnich

We investigate the three-dimensional BCS–BEC crossover in the presence of a Rabi coupling, which strongly affects several properties of the system, such as the chemical potential, the pairing gap and the superfluid density. We determine the critical interaction strength, below which the system is normal also at zero temperature. Finally, we calculate the effect of the Rabi coupling on the critical temperature of the superfluid-to-normal phase transition by using different theoretical schemes.

Critical Temperature in the BCS-BEC Crossover with Spin-Orbit Coupling

Luca Dell’Anna, Stefano Grava

We review the study of the superfluid phase transition in a system of fermions whose interaction can be tuned continuously along the crossover from Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer (BCS) superconducting phase to a Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC), also in the presence of a spin–orbit coupling. Below a critical temperature the system is characterized by an order parameter. Generally a mean field approximation cannot reproduce the correct behavior of the critical temperature Tc over the whole crossover. We analyze the crucial role of quantum fluctuations beyond the mean-field approach useful to find Tc along the crossover in the presence of a spin–orbit coupling, within a path integral approach. A formal and detailed derivation for the set of equations useful to derive Tc is performed in the presence of Rashba, Dresselhaus and Zeeman couplings. In particular in the case of only Rashba coupling, for which the spin–orbit effects are more relevant, the two-body bound state exists for any value of the interaction, namely in the full crossover. As a result the effective masses of the emerging bosonic excitations are finite also in the BCS regime.

A BCS-BEC crossover in the extended Falicov-Kimball model: Variational cluster approach

Kazuhiro Seki, Tatsuya Kaneko, S Yamaki +2 more

Motivated by recent experimental and theoretical studies of excitonic insulators, we use the variational cluster approximation to calculate the single-particle Green's function and anomalous Green's function of the Falicov-Kimball model extended by including a finite valence bandwidth. We thus determine the single-particle excitation gap due to the bound-state formation of an electron and a hole. We also evaluate the order parameter of the excitonic insulating state indicating quantum coherence of condensed excitons. We thereby discuss the excitonic insulator that typifies either a BCS condensate of electron-hole pairs (weak-coupling regime) or a Bose-Einstein condensate of preformed excitons (strong-coupling regime). A BCS-BEC crossover of the model thus manifests itself as a function of the Coulombic coupling strength.
