Suppressing decoherence of spin waves in a warm atomic vapor by applying a guiding magnetic field

Long Tian, Shujing Li, Zhiying Zhang +1 more

Abstract We report an experimental and theoretical investigation to extend lifetimes of light storages by applying guiding magnetic fields in a room-temperature atomic vapor. The storages are based on dynamic electromagnetically induced transparency. Retrieval efficiencies versus storage time are experimentally measured for different strengths of the guiding magnetic fields. The measured results show that the 1/ e storage times are ∼6 μ s and ∼59 μ s for the guiding field B 0z = 0 and B 0z = 93 mG, respectively. Physical processes causing decoherence in an atomic ensemble have been discussed and analyzed. A theory model which is used to evaluate the decoherence caused by fluctuations of transverse magnetic fields is developed. Based on this evaluation, the fact that storage lifetimes can be increased by applying guiding magnetic fields is well explained.

Cavity-enhanced and spatial-multimode spin-wave-photon quantum interface

Minjie Wang, Haole Jiao, Jiajin Lu +5 more

Practical realizations of quantum repeaters require quantum memory simultaneously providing high retrieval efficiency, long lifetime and multimode storages. So far, the combination of high retrieval efficiency and spatially multiplexed storages into a single memory remains challenging. Here, we set up a ring cavity that supports an array including 6 TEM00 modes and then demonstrated cavity enhanced and spatially multiplexed spin wave photon quantum interface (QI). The cavity arrangement is according to Fermat' optical theorem, which enables the six modes to experience the same optical length per round trip. Each mode includesn horizontal and vertical polarizations. Via DLCZ process in a cold atomic ensemble, we create non classically correlated pairs of spin waves and Stokes photons in the 12 modes. The retrieved fields from the multiplexed SWs are enhanced by the cavity and the average intrinsic retrieval efficiency reaches 70% at zero delay. The storage time for the case that cross-correlation function of the multiplexed QI is beyond 2 reaches 0.6ms .

Toward heralded single-photon storage via chiral cavity-enhanced spontaneous Raman scattering

Can Sun, Yi‐bo Hou, Xiang Chen +6 more

We propose a scheme of heralded storages of single photons via spontaneous Raman scattering (SRS) enhanced by a chiral standing-wave cavity, which creates a non-classically correlated pair of a spin wave and a Stokes photon (heralded photon) when a single-photon “write” pulse is applied to an atomic ensemble. In this scheme, to decrease the power of the write pulse for SRS, the write laser and the Stokes fields are aligned to propagate near-collinearly through the atoms. The short storage lifetime remains a challenge in standing-wave cavity-enhanced SRS. To prolong the storage lifetime, we achieve a long-wavelength spin-wave memory by removing the backward-scattering Stokes field from the cavity, which is realized by using non-reciprocal couplings between the Stokes fields and the atoms. In the experiment, the memory lifetime is demonstrated up to ∼100 μs, which is beyond the limitation (∼350 ns) of the storage in the atomic ensembles coupled to standing-wave cavities. We achieve a spin-wave memory for the write pulse containing a mean photon number of ∼4. The quantum correlation of the Stokes-spin-wave pairs is beyond 2, which gives strong evidence of non-classical behavior.
