Vacuons and Quasi-phonons: The Hidden Side of Bogoliubov Collective Excitations

Abstract

In a series of papers [1, 2, 3], the author exactly diagonalized the truncated Hamiltonian Hc , proposed by Bogoliubov [4, 5], as a low energy approximation for the weakly interacting boson gas. In addition to the well know collective excitations (CEs) resulting from the Bogoliubov Canonic Approximation (BCA) [6, 7], and denoted as quasi-phonons (QPs), the exact eigenstates of Hc exhibit a new kind of CEs (the `hidden side' which the title alludes to), that we denote as vacuons. Those CEs are created/annihilated by adsorp-tion/emission of a quantum of energy twice as large as the activation energy of a QP. Being momentless, they are reminiscent of Cooper pairs of bosons, with opposite moments. The e_ects of the vacuons on the dynamics of the gas are discussed, with their possible exper-imental evidence.

Exact diagonalization of the truncated Bogoliubov Hamiltonian

L. Ferrari

The present short note is simply intended to communicate that I have analytically diagonalized the Bogoliubov truncated Hamiltonian $H_c$~\cite{Bogo1,Bogo2}, in an interacting bosonic gas. This is the natural prosecution of my work~\cite{MS}, now denoted as (I), where the diagonalization was performed only in the subspace corresponding to zero momentum collective excitations (CE).

Variational approach to collective excitations

Michelangelo Sambataro, Nguyen Dinh Dang

We discuss a variational approach to collective excitations in a boson formalism based on quasiparticles. Bosons are defined in correspondence with pairs of quasiparticles and boson images of fermion operators are constructed by means of a mapping procedure of Marumori-type. Phonons of the type used within the random phase approximation (RPA) are introduced as Bogoliubov transformations of these bosons. The variables entering into the definition of these phonons as well as of the quasiparticle operators are fixed simultaneously by minimizing the expectation value of the boson Hamiltonian in the vacuum of the phonons. The approach is tested within an exactly solvable two-level model which is characterized by a pairing Hamiltonian. A quite good agreement is found for the energies of the ground state and of the first ${0}^{+}$ excited state. The comparison with the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer method and the quasiparticle RPA as well as with some recent self-consistent RPA-type approaches is discussed.

Kelvon–Bogoliubov-phonon interaction dynamics in a superfluid quantum vortex

Kazunari Ochi, Junichi Takahashi, Eiji Nakano

Elementary excitation in the presence of a bosonic superfluid vortex line includes a kelvon and a Bogoliubov phonon as Nambu-Goldstone bosons, associated with spontaneous breaking of translational and $\text{U}(1)$ symmetries, respectively. Using the Bogoliubov approximation, we construct an effective Hamiltonian to describe the interplay among kelvons and Bogoliubov phonons in a microscopic manner and apply it for the decay process of an excited kelvon with Bogoliubov-phonon emission. Such a decay process governs the late-time behavior of vortex-excitation dynamics observed in cold-atom experiments and also in follow-up numerical simulations using the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We show our numerical result of the decay process and compare it with these previous studies. Our formalism provides the interaction Hamiltonian in terms of wave functions and energy spectra of the elementary excitations, thus potentially being useful in the description of other low-energy phenomena caused by the kelvon--Bogoliubov-phonon interaction.

A Microscopic Theory of Superfluids. I: Quasi-Particles and the Extended Bogoliubov Transformation

Shuichiro Yamasaki

Creation and annihilation operators of quasi-particles are introduced into the description of a finite temperature system of degenerate bosons with the aid of a canonical transformation which generalizes the one due to Bogoliubov. A variational calculation taking into account the interaction between non-zero momentum particles shows that the quasi-particles are phonons in the long wave-length limit. The state of the system, which is approximated by the grand canonical ensemble of the quasi-particles, approaches the Hartree-Fock state when the condensate is depleted completely at the critical temperature.

Excitation spectrum of a system of interacting bosons

Moorad Alexanian, R. A. Brito

The Bogoliubov treatment of a weakly interacting Bose gas is extended by allowing macroscopic occupation of many single-particle quantum states. This generalization of having more than a single condensed mode gives rise to a nonuniform condensate and is being considered as a possible mechanism for the description of a dense strongly interacting Bose gas at low temperatures. The model with a repulsive $\ensuremath{\delta}$-function interparticle potential gives an energy spectrum of elementary excitations or quasiparticles with both phonon and roton features. The values obtained for the roton minimum energy $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ and the speed of (first) sound agree reasonably well with inelastic-neutron-scattering data.
