Phase-encoded measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution with practical spontaneous-parametric-down-conversion sources

Chun Hua Zhou, Wan‐Su Bao, Wei Chen +4 more

Measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (MDI-QKD) with weak coherent sources has been widely and meticulously analyzed. However, the analysis for MDI-QKD with spontaneous-parametric-down-conversion sources (SPDCS) is incomplete. In this paper, we propose two passive decoy protocols suitable for parameter estimation in MDI-QKD using SPDCS. By accounting for practical parameters of SPDCS with thermal distribution, we present an investigation on the performances of MDI-QKD under the active three-intensity decoy protocol, the passive two-intensity decoy protocol, and the modified passive three-intensity protocol, respectively. Phase randomization, inherently a prerequisite for decoy protocol, is taken into consideration for evaluating the overall quantum bit gain and quantum bit error rate. The numerical simulations show that the MDI-QKD using SPDCS with practical decoy protocols can be demonstrated to be comparable to the asymptotical case and has apparent superiority both in transmission distance and key generation rate compared to the one using weak coherent sources. Our results also indicate that the modified passive three-intensity decoy protocol can perform better than the active three-intensity decoy protocol in MDI-QKD using practical SPDCS.

Realizing the measure-device-independent quantum-key-distribution with passive heralded-single photon sources

Qin Wang, Xingyu Zhou, Guang‐Can Guo

In this paper, we put forward a new approach towards realizing measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution with passive heralded single-photon sources. In this approach, both Alice and Bob prepare the parametric down-conversion source, where the heralding photons are labeled according to different types of clicks from the local detectors, and the heralded ones can correspondingly be marked with different tags at the receiver's side. Then one can obtain four sets of data through using only one-intensity of pump light by observing different kinds of clicks of local detectors. By employing the newest formulae to do parameter estimation, we could achieve very precise prediction for the two-single-photon pulse contribution. Furthermore, by carrying out corresponding numerical simulations, we compare the new method with other practical schemes of measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution. We demonstrate that our new proposed passive scheme can exhibit remarkable improvement over the conventional three-intensity decoy-state measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution with either heralded single-photon sources or weak coherent sources. Besides, it does not need intensity modulation and can thus diminish source-error defects existing in several other active decoy-state methods. Therefore, if taking intensity modulating errors into account, our new method will show even more brilliant performance.

Fully passive quantum key distribution with parametric down-conversion source

Jia‐Wei Ying, Qi Zhang, Shi‐Pu Gu +3 more

The fully passive source is capable of passively generating decoy states and performing passive encoding simultaneously, avoiding the side-channel risks caused by active modulation operations at the source end, thus effectively enhance the security in quantum key distribution (QKD). Existing fully passive QKD protocol and experiments exploit phase-randomized coherent pulses. In this paper, we propose a fully passive QKD protocol using parametric down-conversion source. The decoy state generation and encoding operation can be carried out passively by parameter down-conversion progress. This protocol has several advantages. First, it can also eliminate all side channels in active modulators. Second, compared with fully passive QKD protocol with phase-randomized coherent pulses, our protocol can significantly increase the key rate and extend the communication distance. Meanwhile, in terms of the transmission rate, our protocol is also closer to that of actively modulated QKD and can achieve fully passive modulation with fewer resources. Moreover, combined with measurement-device-independent (MDI) QKD, this protocol can even potentially achieve robustness against side channels in both detectors and modulators.
