Abstract

Recent research in the fields related to the quantum information theory (QIT) is becoming some of the most intriguing and promising investigations in contemporary physics. Many novel QIT concepts are discussed in the literature, and the broad range of new models of quantum optics and solid-state physics have been recently considered in the context of QIT. Theideas of symmetry are widely discussed in all physical sciences, becoming keystones of various concepts and considerations, leading to novel discoveries in physics. Thus, this Special Issue is devoted to the broad range of QIT topics that are related to the ideas of symmetry. It covers a broad range of ideas that can develop upon the basic research and applications in the field of quantum information, and in general, quantum theory.

Quantum Mechanics

Trong Tuong Truong

Quantum mechanics has brought a gigantic breakthrough to physics since its introduction more than a century ago. It has led to many discoveries at the microscopic level, initiated new pathways to unsuspected properties of matter, and produced new and amazing usable applications. This Special Issue of Symmetry is devoted to recent advances in theoretical developments in quantum mechanics. It is part of the global effort to provide a continuous supply of information to the research community. This volume gathers contributions in various directions and their contents are best described chronologically by their abstracts, which are hereafter listed for the convenience of the reader.

What is Quantum Information?

Olímpia Lombardi, Sebastián Fortín, Federico Holik +1 more

Combining physics and philosophy, this is a uniquely interdisciplinary examination of quantum information science which provides an up-to-date examination of developments in this field. The authors provide coherent definitions and theories of information, taking clearly defined approaches to considering information in connection with quantum mechanics, probability, and correlations. Concepts addressed include entanglement of quantum states, the relation of quantum correlations to quantum information, and the meaning of the informational approach for the foundations of quantum mechanics. Furthermore, the mathematical concept of information in the communicational context, and the notion of pragmatic information are considered. Suitable as both a discussion of the conceptual and philosophical problems of this field and a comprehensive stand-alone introduction, this book will benefit both experienced and new researchers in quantum information and the philosophy of physics.

Logic and Quantum Physics

Sonja Smets

Current research in Logic is no longer confined to the traditional study of logical consequence or valid inference. As can be witnessed by the range of topics covered in this special issue, the subject matter of logic encompasses several kinds of informational processes ranging from proofs and inferences to dialogues, observations, measurements, communication and computation. What interests us here is its application to quantum physics: how does logic handle informational processes such as observations and measurements of quantum systems? What are the basic logical principles fit to handle and reason about quantum physical processes? These are the central questions in this paper. It is my aim to provide the reader with some food for thought and to give some pointers to the literature that provide an easy access to this field of research. In the next section I give a brief historical sketch of the origin of the quantum logic project. Next I will explain the theory of orthomodular lat-tices in section 2. Section 3 covers the syntax and semantics of traditional

Resources of the Quantum World

Gilad Gour

This book delves into the burgeoning field of quantum resource theories, a novel and vibrant area of research within quantum information science that seeks to unify diverse quantum phenomena under a single framework. By recognizing various attributes of physical systems as "resources," this approach offers a fresh perspective on quantum phenomena, transforming our understanding and application of concepts such as quantum entanglement, coherence, and more. With a focus on the pedagogical, the book aims to equip readers with the advanced mathematical tools and physical principles needed to navigate and contribute to this rapidly evolving field. It covers a wide range of topics, from the foundational aspects of quantum mechanics and quantum information to detailed explorations of specific resource theories, including entanglement, asymmetry, and thermodynamics. Through rigorous mathematical exposition and a unique axiomatic approach, the book provides deep insights into the operational and conceptual frameworks that underpin quantum resource theories, making it an invaluable resource for graduate students, early-career researchers, and anyone interested in the cutting-edge developments in quantum information science.
