Topological dynamics and dynamical scaling behavior of vortices in a two-dimensional XY model

Weikai Qi, Yong Chen

By using topological current theory we study the inner topological structure of vortices a two-dimensional (2D) XY model and find the topological current relating to the order parameter field. A scalar field, $ψ$, is introduced through the topological current theory. By solving the scalar field, the interaction energy of vortices in a 2D XY model is revisited. We study the dynamical evolution of vortices and present the branch conditions for generating, annihilating, crossing, splitting and merging of vortices. During the growth or annihilation of vortices, the dynamical scaling law of relevant length in a 2D XY model, $ξ(t)\propto(t-t^*)^{1/z}$, is obtained in the neighborhood of the limit point, given the dynamic exponent $z=2$. This dynamical scaling behavior is consistent with renormalization group theory, numerical simulations, and experimental results. Furthermore, it is found that during the crossing, splitting and merging of vortices, the dynamical scaling law of relevant length is $ξ(t)\propto(t-t^*)$. However, if vortices are at rest during splitting or merging, the dynamical scaling law of relevant length is a constat.

Crossover and Critical Behavior in the Layered XY Model

Roman Kracht, Andrea Trombettoni, Ilaria Maccari +1 more

Motivated by the interplay between 2D and 3D scaling signatures observed in unconventional layered superconductors, we present a systematic Monte Carlo study of the three-dimensional classical XY model with anisotropic in-plane $J_\parallel$ and inter-plane $J_\perp$ couplings. Our study includes very small values of the system anisotropy $Δ=J_\perp /J_\parallel$ not studied before, and focuses on characterizing the crossover from quasi-2D topological scaling to genuine 3D critical behavior. The numerical results for the critical temperature unambiguously reveal a logarithmic scaling with $Δ$, directly related to the topological scaling in the 2D limit. Despite the 3D nature of the layered XY criticality, topological scaling signatures survive up to system sizes comparable to the crossover length $\ell_J$, which diverges at small $Δ$ with a scaling behavior reminiscent of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition. This shows that genuine 3D symmetry-breaking behavior emerges only at exceedingly large system sizes when the anisotropy is very strong. Our results indicate that new experimental evidence is required to clarify the extent to which the critical signatures observed in layered strongly correlated materials are shaped by their pronounced anisotropy.

Aging Phenomenon of 2D XY Model Starting from an Ordered Intial State

Xiaoyu Zhao

With Monte Carlo simulation method, the aging phenomenon of the 2D XY model is numerically studied.Starting from an ordered initial state, the system is suddenly quenched to critical temperature Tc.The two-time autocorrelation function A(t,t') is measured. For a dynamic process with an ordered initial state, the difficult problem is that accurate analysis is lagging behind the Monte Carlo simulation study. So many activities have been devoted to dynamic scaling form.According to the numerical experimental data of 2D XY non-equilibrium system, the relation between A(t,t') and ratio of spatial correlation length is detected. The aging phenomenon exhibits a dynamic scaling behavior induced by the time correlation. The aging phenomenon is characterized by the dynamic scale invariance. The aging phenomenon of 2D XY model is confirmed.Especially, the correction of scaling behavior is numerically verified, the form of dynamic scaling of A(t,t') is more creditable than existing literatures. For a dynamic process starting from an ordered initial state, the scaling form assumption fits the numerical data well. The scaling form holds not only at lower temperatures but also around Tc.This is because of the simulation temperature is close to the critical temperature.Based on the dynamic scaling, the experimental data indicate that more accurate values of the critical exponents can be obtained. In addition, the data collapse phenomenon is observed.

We study the dynamical evolution of vortices and present the branch conditions for generating, annihilating, crossing, splitting and merging of vortices. During the growth or annihilation of vortices, the dynamical scaling law of relevant length in a 2D XY model, ξ(t)∝(t−t∗)1/zξ(t)\propto(t-t^*)^{1/z}ξ(t)∝(t−t∗)1/z, is obtained in the neighborhood of the limit point, given the dynamic exponent z=2z=2z=2. This dynamical scaling behavior is consistent with renormalization group theory, numerical simulations, and experimental results. Furthermore, it is found that during the crossing, splitting and merging of vortices, the dynamical scaling law of relevant length is ξ(t)∝(t−t∗)ξ(t)\propto(t-t^*)ξ(t)∝(t−t∗). However, if vortices are at rest during splitting or merging, the dynamical scaling law of relevant length is a constat.
