Storing Light by Surfing on Silicon

Alexander Hellemans

Light is a great way to transmit information, but its speedy photons are difficult to slow down when signals must be delayed, for example, to be stored for brief times in optoelectronic circuits. Now a report in the 26 May Physical Review Letters describes a clever solution: translating photons into pairs of electric charges that slowly surf on a sound wave across a semiconductor chip until they recombine in a pulse of light.

Quantum Crystal Surf Drive (QCSD): Controlled Momentum Transfer via Spatially Offset Floquet Time Crystals

Karel Fildán

This paper presents the Quantum Crystal Surf Drive (QCSD), a theoretical framework for controlled momentum transfer using spatially offset Floquet-type time crystals as modulators of a photonic environment. A photon traveling through this environment interacts with a deterministic phase gradient generated by the spatial offset between two time crystal subsystems, resulting in resonant acceleration analogous to a surfer on a wave — without violating the no-communication theorem or special relativity. The system addresses decoherence via short periodic control pulses that renew quantum coherence before it reaches a critical threshold, analogous to parametric resonance. Energy is supplied exclusively by these control pulses; the time crystals themselves function as resonant amplifiers, not energy sources. The concept includes measurable experimental predictions testable with current table-top equipment, and introduces the notion of inertial immunity for crew — a direct analogue of the Alcubierre warp bubble mechanism applied at the level of the photonic field, resulting in zero G-force during arbitrary maneuvers. Keywords: time crystals, Floquet systems, photonic momentum transfer, quantum propulsion, parametric resonance, decoherence control, inertial immunity, Alcubierre analogue
