Realization of bichromatic optical superlattices

Axel Görlitz, Toshiya Kinoshita, Theodor W. Hänsch +1 more

We present the experimental realization of optical superlattices created by exposing laser cooled ${}^{85}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms to a bichromatic standing-wave light field. The two light frequencies are tuned close to the ${D}_{1}$ and ${D}_{2}$ lines of ${}^{85}\mathrm{Rb}.$ The total optical potential seen by the atoms exhibits a modulation at the spatial beat period of the two light fields in addition to the typical periodicity on the scale of an optical wavelength. The bichromatic light field cools the atoms into the superlattice potential, resulting in a density modulation on a macroscopic scale. We have observed the density modulation directly in one- and three-dimensional superlattice configurations using an absorption imaging technique.

Wafer-level optical packaging for chip-scale atomic magnetometers

Qi Gan, Lei Wu, Yu Ji +1 more

A wafer-level optical package solution for chip-scale atomic magnetometers is presented, which is based on microelectronic fabrication process on a 4 inch wafer. A module is fabricated following the process. By measuring the intensity of the light, it is indicated that the quality of parallelism and polarizability of the laser beam from a Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) in the module are acceptable. The frequency of the VCSEL is locked to D1 line of Rubidium through proper adjustment of temperature and driving current. The module is employed in an atomic magnetometer which operates in Mz configuration for the detection the strength of magnetic fields. Results show the feasibility of the package in a magnetometer system.

We present experimental results for the dynamics of cold atoms in a far detuned amplitude-modulated optical standing wave. Phase-space resonances constitute distinct peaks in the atomic momentum distribution containing up to 65% of all atoms resulting from a mixed quantum chaotic phase space. We characterize the atomic behavior in classical and quantum regimes and we present the applicable quantum and classical theory, which we have developed and refined. We show experimental proof that the size and the position of the resonances in phase space can be controlled by varying several parameters, such as the modulation frequency, the scaled well depth, the modulation amplitude, and the scaled Planck's constant of the system. We have found a surprising stability against amplitude noise. We present methods to accurately control the momentum of an ensemble of atoms using these phase-space resonances which could be used for efficient phase-space state preparation.
