Replica symmetry and massless modes in the Ising spin glass

Alan J. Bray, M A Moore

The n to 0 replica method is used to study the Ising spin glass below its transition temperature. The order parameter correlation functions are shown to contain massless modes ('replicon' modes) within mean-field theory. These become unstable at first order in perturbation theory about the mean-field solution. An alternative formulation of perturbation theory, however, yields a family of new solutions which break, in general, the symmetry between the replicas. Stability requirements single out a unique member of this family which exhibits (i) massless moded, and (ii) a restoration of replica symmetry. Within the framework of the new solution, perturbation theory for the order parameter (Q alpha beta ) breaks down for dimensionalities d<or=4 due to an infrared divergence. Four dimensions is interpreted as the 'lower critical dimensionality' of the theory, below which there can be no order of the Edwards-Anderson kind (1975).

Symmetry breaking phases and transitions in an Ising fusion category lattice model

Soumil Roychowdhury, Chenjie Wang

An anyon-chain-like lattice model with symmetry described by the Ising fusion category is studied. Combining numerical and analytical studies, we uncover a rich phase diagram that contains three phases: a symmetric critical phase and two categorical symmetry breaking phases. The symmetric phase lies in the same universality class as the usual critical Ising model. The first symmetry-breaking phase, dubbed the \emph{categorical ferromagnetic} phase, has the Ising fusion category fully broken and exhibits a threefold ground-state degeneracy, as expected from the generalized Landau paradigm. The other symmetry-breaking phase is analogous to a conventional antiferromagnet: it breaks lattice translation and part of the Ising fusion category, and therefore is termed the \emph{categorical antiferromagnetic} phase. Unlike ordinary antiferromagnetic states associated with finite invertible symmetry breaking, this phase itself is critical, being described by a fourfold degenerate Ising conformal field theory. We argue more generally that antiferromagnetic states associated with broken non-invertible symmetries have a large low-energy manifold that grows exponentially in system size, due to the greater-than-one quantum dimension of domain walls. We also numerically study the transitions between the three phases. The transition between the symmetric and categorical ferromagnetic phase is described by the $c=7/10$ tricritical Ising CFT, while the transition between the symmetric and categorical antiferromagnetic phases is less understood. Our numerical data suggest that the latter transition is continuous and described by a conformal field theory with central charge $c=3/2$.

Conformal Boundary Conditions of Symmetry-Enriched Quantum Critical Spin Chains

Xue-Jia Yu, Rui-Zhen Huang, Hong-Hao Song +3 more

Some quantum critical states cannot be smoothly deformed into each other without either crossing some multicritical points or explicitly breaking certain symmetries even if they belong to the same universality class. This brings up the notion of "symmetry-enriched" quantum criticality. While recent works in the literature focused on critical states with robust degenerate edge modes, we propose that the conformal boundary condition (B.C.) is a more generic characteristic of such quantum critical states. We show that in two families of quantum spin chains, which generalize the Ising and the three-state Potts models, the quantum critical point between a symmetry-protected topological phase and a symmetry-breaking order realizes a conformal B.C. distinct from the simple Ising and Potts chains. Furthermore, we argue that the conformal B.C. can be derived from the bulk effective field theory, which realizes a novel bulk-boundary correspondence in symmetry-enriched quantum critical states.
