Abstract

Abstract Recent work on imaging of the quantum fluid in the microcavity optical parametric oscillator is described. It is shown that the high density phase has an intrinsic, spatially non‐uniform distribution arising from quasi‐particle interactions which blue shift the dispersion curve, and in plane fluctuations in the photonic potential of the microcavity. Isolation of single modes using spectral and spatial resolution enables the coherence of the OPO to be studied. Particle‐particle interactions are shown to play a key role in determining the temporal coherence. The behaviour of the coherence of the macroscopically occupied phase is shown to contrast strongly with that of a non‐interacting system. Evidence for signal‐idler energy and phase correlations is obtained. (© 2006 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Abstract The special issue entitled “Frontiers in Semiconductor Nanoscience” with a total of more than forty contributions from leading scientists in semiconductor and nanostructure physics has been prepared to honor Gerhard Abstreiter, Technische Universität München. The present Part B contains Feature Articles and Original Papers in the areas of quantum transport, optical properties and coherent phenomena. Part A of the special issue on nano‐biological systems, novel materials and nanostructures is published in phys. stat. sol. (a) 203, No. 14 (2006). The cover picture has been taken from the Feature Article [1] by Maurice Skolnick et al. It illustrates a calculation of the signal distribution and photonic potential (white contours) in a microcavity optical parametric oscillator with evidence for strong localisation in the potential minima. This issue also contains articles presented at the 7th International Conference on Excitonic Processes in Condensed Matter held in Winston‐Salem, USA, 26–30 June 2006. Parametric oscillation in semiconductor microcavities: nonlinear and quantum effects

Jean‐Philippe Karr, A. Baas, Marco Romanelli +2 more

Abstract We report the observation of optical bistability in a semiconductor microcavity pumped at the “magic angle” above the parametric oscillation threshold. Experimental evidence is given in the form of a hysteresis cycle of the nonlinear emission as a function of the pump intensity. A model analogous to those developped for triply resonant Optical Parametric Oscillators (OPO) is in good agreement with the experimental findings. In the second part, we study the potential application of the parametric oscillation regime to quantum optics. The quantum correlations between the emitted “signal” and “idler” beams are computed. We show that very strong quantum correlations between the signal and idler polaritons can be achieved. However the quantum effects in the outgoing light fields are strongly reduced due to the large mismatch in the coupling of the signal and idler polaritons to the external photons. Dominant Effect of Polariton-Polariton Interactions on the Coherence of the Microcavity Optical Parametric Oscillator

Dmitry N. Krizhanovskii, D. Sanvitto, A. P. D. Love +3 more

The importance of interaction effects in determining the temporal coherence of spectrally and spatially isolated single modes of the microcavity optical parametric oscillator (OPO) is demonstrated. As a function of macroscopic occupancy, the coherence time (tau c) first increases linearly and then exhibits saturation behavior, reaching maximum values of up to 500 ps. Good agreement is found with a model including fluctuations in polariton number and polariton-polariton interactions between the OPO states. tau c is a property of the coupled OPO system, a result confirmed by the finding of equal coherence times for signal and idler, even though the idler is subject to strong additional scattering.

Quantum Imagess in Non Degenerate Optical Parametric Oscillators

C. Szwaj, Gian‐Luca Oppo

Quantum images, that is inhomogeneous field distributions purely generated by quantum fluctuations, persist when passing from the degenerate to the non-degenerate case of optical parametric oscillators (OPO). Below the threshold for parametric oscillation where the near-field distributions are homogeneous both in intensity and phase, appropriate spatial correlation functions anticipate the transverse spatial pattern that appears above threshold. In particular, the angular dependence of the far field spatial correlation function is able to reveal the travelling-wave nature of the phase pattern above threshold typical of nondegenerate OPOs. Cross-correlation functions between signal and idler intensities show clear evidence of the non-classical nature of the output light.

Statistics of polaritons in microcavities

P. Schwendimann, Cristiano Ciuti, A. Quattropani

We discuss the quantum statistical properties of exciton-polaritons in semiconductor microcavities. The nonlinear dynamics is treated within a model of interacting bosons for the signal, pump and idler modes. We focus on the regime of parametric amplification below threshold. We present the time evolution of the signal and idler modes towards their stationary solutions and evaluate the amount of squeezing of the radiation emitted out of the microcavity in a configuration, which is relevant for experiments. Quantum correlations in noise-sustained optical patterns

Stephen Mark Barnett, Roberta Zambrini, Gonzalo G. Izús +2 more

Summary form only given. Noise-sustained patterns have been recently predicted in several systems including a Kerr cavity and an optical parametric oscillator. In these systems a regime of convective instability can appear, in which a transverse pattern arises as a macroscopic manifestation of amplified and spatially structured quantum noise, with magnification factors of several order of magnitudes. We study quantum correlations in the convective regime of a degenerate type-I optical parametric oscillator (OPO) using a time dependent parametric approximation, in which the intracavity pump field is taken as a classical stochastic field.
