Abstract

In a fascinating case of physics being turned on its head, a group of researchers at Yale University in the US has created an "antilaser" that almost perfectly absorbs incoming beams of coherent light.

Antilaser: resonance absorption mode or coherent perfect absorption?

Nikolay N. Rosanov

Abstract The main idea of the recent studies of ‘coherent perfect absorption’ is shown to coincide with that published in 1962 by A P Khapalyuk. Generalizing this approach to the case of layered systems with alternating absorbing and amplifying media requires a more thorough analysis of possible instabilities.

Beam me down

Physicists had long dreamed of creating an atom laser – a coherent beam of atoms that could be collimated or brought to a focus, just like an optical laser.
