Fermionic Gaussians

Abstract

The notion of a Gaussian as the exponential of a quadratic is rather familiar. Such functions are of considerable importance in a number of contexts, for example within quantum theory. Thus, in the Schrödinger representation of the canonical commutation relations they alone minimize uncertainty and they appear as ground states for harmonic oscillators. Also in the complex-wave representation of a free boson field they arise as transforms of the Fock vacuum under certain Bogoliubov automorphisms.

Further Representations of the Canonical Commutation Relations

Martin Florig, Stephen J. Summers

We construct a new class of representations of the canonical commutation relations, which generalizes previously known classes. We perturb the infinitesimal generator of the initial Fock representation (in other words, the free quantum field) by a function of the field which is square-integrable with respect to the associated Gaussian measure. We characterize perturbations which lead to representations of the canonical commutation relations. We provide conditions entailing the irreducibility of such representations, show explicitly that our class of representations subsumes previously studied classes, and give necessary and sufficient conditions for our representations to be unitarily equivalent, or just quasi-equivalent, with Fock, coherent or quasifree representations. 1991 Mathematics Subject Classification: 81S05, 46L60, 81T05.

Representation theory of Gaussian unitary transformations for bosonic and fermionic systems

Tommaso Guaita, Lucas Hackl, Thomas Quella

Gaussian unitary transformations are generated by quadratic Hamiltonians, i.e., Hamiltonians containing quadratic terms in creations and annihilation operators, and are heavily used in many areas of quantum physics, ranging from quantum optics and condensed matter theory to quantum information and quantum field theory in curved spacetime. They are known to form a representation of the metaplectic and spin group for bosons and fermions, respectively. These groups are the double covers of the symplectic and special orthogonal group, respectively, and our goal is to analyze the behavior of the sign ambiguity that one needs to deal with when moving between these groups and their double cover. We relate this sign ambiguity to expectation values of the form $\langle 0|\exp{(-i\hat{H})}|0\rangle$, where $|0\rangle$ is a Gaussian state and $\hat{H}$ an arbitrary quadratic Hamiltonian. We provide closed formulas for $\langle 0|\exp{(-i\hat{H})}|0\rangle$ and show how we can efficiently describe group multiplications in the double cover without the need of going to a faithful representation on an exponentially large or even infinite-dimensional space. Our construction relies on an explicit parametrization of these two groups (metaplectic, spin) in terms of symplectic and orthogonal group elements together with a twisted U(1) group.

Gaussian type functions defined on a finite set and finite oscillators

Nicolae Cotfas

The mathematical description of the quantum harmonic oscillator is essentially based on the Gaussian function. In the case of a quantum oscillator with finite-dimensional Hilbert space, the position space consists in a finite number of points, and the ground state can be regarded as a finite version of the Gaussian function. Conversely, each finite Gaussian can be used in order to define some finite oscillators. We investigate certain finite Gaussians as concern their Fourier transform, Wigner function and associated oscillators.

Quadratic-exponential functionals of Gaussian quantum processes

Igor G. Vladimirov, Ian R. Petersen, M. R. James

This paper is concerned with exponential moments of integral-of-quadratic functions of quantum processes with canonical commutation relations of position-momentum type. Such quadratic-exponential functionals (QEFs) arise as robust performance criteria in control problems for open quantum harmonic oscillators (OQHOs) driven by bosonic fields. We develop a randomised representation for the QEF using a Karhunen–Loeve expansion of the quantum process on a bounded time interval over the eigenbasis of its two-point commutator kernel, with noncommuting position-momentum pairs as coefficients. This representation holds regardless of a particular quantum state and employs averaging over an auxiliary classical Gaussian random process whose covariance operator is specified by the commutator kernel. This allows the QEF to be related to the moment-generating functional of the quantum process and computed for multipoint Gaussian states. For stationary Gaussian quantum processes, we establish a frequency-domain formula for the QEF rate in terms of the Fourier transform of the quantum covariance kernel in composition with trigonometric functions. A differential equation is obtained for the QEF rate with respect to the risk sensitivity parameter for its approximation and numerical computation. The QEF is also applied to large deviations and worst-case mean square cost bounds for OQHOs in the presence of statistical uncertainty with a quantum relative entropy description.

Probabilistic Bounds with Quadratic-Exponential Moments for Quantum Stochastic Systems

Igor G. Vladimirov

This paper is concerned with quadratic-exponential moments (QEMs) for dynamic variables of quantum stochastic systems with position-momentum type canonical commutation relations. The QEMs play an important role for statistical “localisation” of the quantum dynamics in the form of upper bounds on the tail probability distribution for a positive definite quadratic function of the system variables. We employ a randomised representation of the QEMs in terms of the moment-generating function (MGF) of the system variables, which is averaged over its parameters using an auxiliary classical Gaussian random vector. This representation is combined with a family of weighted L 2 -norms of the MGF, leading to upper bounds for the QEMs of the system variables. These bounds are demonstrated for open quantum harmonic oscillators with vacuum input fields and non-Gaussian initial states.
