On the Equivalence of Coupled Pendula and Quantum Mechanical Non-Crossing Rule

A. Jolk, Claus F. Klingshirn, R. v. Baltz

The classical system of two coupled ideal harmonic oscillators is solved and its exact solution is compared to the quantum mechanical equivalent of two coupled states. In both cases, the coupling leads to a non-crossing behavior with a “level repulsion” depending on the coupling parameter. A special Hamiltonian is presented that gives identical results in the classical and in the quantum mechanical case.

Inelastic Collisions of Slow Atoms: The Two-Level Model

J. Callaway, Judd Q. Bartling

A two-level model of an atomic system is investigated in order to study the cross section for certain inelastic collision processes. An impact-parameter method is employed. The time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation has been integrated numerically for some simple interaction potentials. Cross sections for excitation have been determined and are presented as functions of the parameters describing the model. The results are compared with those obtained by certain approximate methods. The effects of inclusion of diagonal matrix elements in the interaction Hamiltonian are found to be large. For a fixed form of the interaction potential, two cross sections, which may differ quite substantially, are obtained, depending on the algebraic sign of the coupling parameters or the energy difference between the states.

Multi-parameter estimation enhanced by level crossing Hamiltonian structure with Bayesian feedback

Ryo Tatsumi, Le Bin Ho, Hiroaki Matsueda

Level crossings, where two quantum energy levels intersect, are ubiquitous in quantum systems and play a central role in controlling quantum dynamics. In this study, we establish a framework that connects these level crossing structures to the ultimate precision limits of quantum metrology. By analyzing a Hamiltonian with the level crossings structure, we identify the conditions under which multiple parameters can be estimated simultaneously with maximal sensitivity near the level crossing point. We then construct a resource efficient sensing protocol based on unitary quench dynamics and Bayesian estimation, enabling high precision, low cost parameter estimation without requiring entanglement or complex control. We present a protocol whose estimation precision saturates the Holevo Cramer Rao bound, the tightest achievable precision bound in multi parameter estimation. Using the two level model and the two spin Ising model as illustrative examples, we demonstrate how the protocol can be applied to a system with level crossing Hamiltonian structure. Our findings reveal that level crossings serve as universal operating points for precision quantum metrology, offering a simple and scalable path toward practical multi parameter sensing across diverse quantum platforms.
