Abstract

The winners of 25 research grants worth up to €1.25m over five years were revealed by the European Science Foundation and the heads of Europe's research councils last month. Among those who received a European Young Investigators (EURYI) award, was Jakob Reichel from the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich, Germany, who will set up a research group at the Laboratoire Kastler Brossel (LKB) at the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris to study Bose–Einstein condensation on nanofabricated chips.

Movers & shakers

Immanuel Bloch from the University of Mainz and Günther Hasinger from the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics in Garching have each scooped a €1.55m Gottfried Leibniz prize from the German Research Council. Bloch was recognized for creating lasers and “optical lattices” from Bose-Einstein condensates, while Hasinger used X-ray astronomy to study how super-massive black holes collide. The prize will let them carry out search without any administrative duties for up to five years.
