Theoretical analysis of resonances in the polarization spectrum of a two-level atom driven by a polychromatic field

Tai Hyun Yoon, S. A. Pulkin, Jong Rak Park +2 more

Analytic solutions of the optical Bloch equations for a two-level atom interacting with a strong polychromatic field whose frequencies are symmetrically positioned with respect to the atomic frequency are used to obtain the polarization spectrum of the atom. The spectrum is found to consist of a series of discrete peaks or dips superimposed on the continuous part of the spectrum. Physical interpretation of resonances exhibited in the continuous part of the spectrum is given using a semiclassical dressed-atom approach.

Quantum-optical analysis of Wolf’s spectral shifts

Daniel F. V. James

Not long ago Wolf discovered a modification of the spectrum of radiation due to the spatial coherence of the source.1 His analysis used a model correlation function that demonstrated the effect, without discussing any physical mechanism by which the correlations may arise. This paper presents an analysis of one such physical mechanism, namely, the radiation reaction. Following earlier work by Varada and Agarwal,2 an explicit calculation, performed in the harmonic oscillator approximation, for two radiating atoms in equilibrium with a thermal field reveals a relationship between this effect and the well-known shift of atomic oscillator frequencies due to Lamb.

Analysis of full quantum mechanism on possibility for realization of optical gain without population inversion in semiconductor

Guo Changzhi, Chen Shuilian

Based on full quantum mechanical theory, physical mechanism is systematically analyzed for realization of optical gain without population inversion in type-Ⅱ semiconductor quantum well,as well as spectrum of coherent Fano states composed of Γ -valley in the well layer conduction band and X -valley in barrier layer conduction band. The effect of this physical mechanism on Fano quantum interference of optical absorption probabitity is presented, followed by description of the impact of spontaneous emisson resulted from Fano spectrum structure and quantum fluctuation in vacuum field on excited optical gain. The mechanism affords theoretical foundation for the development of semiconductor quantum well laser without population inversion.
