Diffusion Monte Carlo methods for spin-orbit-coupled ultracold Bose gases

Juan Sánchez-Baena, Jordi Boronat, Ferran Mazzanti

We present two diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) algorithms for systems of ultracold quantum gases featuring synthetic spin-orbit interactions. The first one is a spin-integrated DMC method which provides fixed-phase energy estimates. The second one is a discrete spin generalisation of the T-moves spin-orbit DMC [Melton et al., J. Chem. Phys. 144, 244113 (2016)], which provides an upper bound to the fixed-phase energy. The former is a more accurate method but it is restricted to spin-independent two-body interactions. We report a comparison between both algorithms for different systems. As a check of the efficiency of both methods, we compare the DMC energies with results obtained with other numerical methods, finding agreement between both estimations.

Study of dynamic and ground-state propertiesof dipolar Fermi gases using mean-field and quantum Monte Carlo methods

N.M. Matveeva

In this thesis I theoretically study the dynamic and ground state properties of ultracold dipolar Fermi gases. The mean-field approach based on the Thomas-Fermi energy functional is applied to consider the dynamic properties of bilayer harmonically trapped dipolar Fermi gases. The fixed-node Diffusion Monte Carlo method (FNDMC) is used instead to investigate the ground-state properties of two dimensional dipolar Fermi gases. This technique is also applied to the problem of one impurity in a bilayer configuration with dipolar fermions.

All-coupling theory for the Fröhlich polaron

Fabian Grusdt

The Fr\"ohlich model describes the interaction of a mobile impurity with a surrounding bath of phonons which leads to the formation of a quasiparticle, the polaron. In this paper an efficient renormalization group approach is presented which provides a description of Fr\"ohlich polarons in all regimes ranging from weak to strong coupling. The extended renormalization group approach introduced here is capable of predicting ground state properties for arbitrarily small impurity masses. This allows us to obtain the full phase diagram of the Fr\"ohlich Hamiltonian, which we present concretely for the Bogoliubov-Fr\"ohlich model originally introduced to describe ultracold impurities in a Bose-Einstein condensate. For this model, whose regime of validity in ultracold quantum gases is the subject of debate, we benchmark our method by comparison of the ground state energy to recent diagrammatic quantum Monte Carlo calculations.
