Nonclassicality of Mixed States with Photon Number Coherence

Spencer Rogers, Salman Shahid, Wenchao Ge

The operational resource theory (ORT) measure is a nonclassicality measure for bosonic states, notable for its resource-theoretic properties and connection to metrology. However, it can be difficult to evaluate, being linked to an optimization problem for mixed states. Here, we present ORT measure calculations for mixed states with photon-number coherence. We give exact formulas governing the ORT measure of a broad class of rank-two mixed states, and numerical solutions for some higher-rank states. We also compare the nonclassicality of these states to their metrological power, thus showing in what regimes the metrological power manages to saturate the ORT bound. Throughout, we consider the role of coherence. In particular, we show that nonclassicality and metrological power never increase under bosonic dephasing, but may plateau in a manner similar to entanglement sudden death. Nevertheless, lowering photon-number coherence more freely can sometimes yield more nonclassical and metrologically useful states.

Optical Tomogram of Number State Filtered Coherent States

J. Merlin, A. Basherrudin Mahmud Ahmed

The optical tomogram of the number state filtered coherent states is studied comprehensively. The superposition of coherent state and number state is reflected in the optical tomogram via quantum interference. The qualitative signatures of the nonclassicality are captured as rapid oscillations in the optical tomogram of number state filtered coherent states.Entropic squeezing is estimated directly from the optical tomogram through the Shannon information entropy. The effects of the non-unit quantum efficiency of the photodetectors on the optical tomogram and the entropic squeezing are observed. Finally, two decoherence models, namely phase damping and amplitude damping models, are employed to assess the degradation of the nonclassical features in the optical tomogram.

Let’s burn a hole in the binomial state of the radiation field

Priya Malpani

In quantum optics, nonclassical properties of various quantum states of radiation field are frequently studied. Some of those states are finite dimensional and referred to as qudits. These states are important because of their potential applications in quantum information processing. Further, nonclassical states are those which do not have any classical counterpart. Consequently, to establish quantum supremacy, we always require nonclassical state. Recently, Sivakumar and Meher have studied the nonclassical properties of the number state filtered coherent state, and shown that the number state filtering introduces nonclassical features into coherent state which is otherwise classical. This observation motivated us to investigate the role of hole burning (state filtering) on a state which is already nonclassical. Specifically, we have selected a Binomial state which is known to be nonclassical as our test bed and burnt a hole at vacuum (equivalently filtered the vacuum state). To check the nonclassical properties of vacuum filtered binomial state, we have used Vogel’s criterion, criterion of higher- and lower-order antibunching, criterion of higher-order sub-Poissonian photon statistics, Linear entropy etc. The investigation results show that vacuum filtered binomial state studied here is highly nonclassical, and the hole burning process enhances the nonclassical depth.
