Abstract

Abstract We analyze the physical meaning of quantum phases for moving electric/magnetic dipoles through a superposition of quantum phases for point-like charges of the dipole, and in this way we disclose two new quantum phases for moving charges, next to the well-known magnetic and electric Aharonov-Bohm phases. We find that a consistent description of the full set of quantum phase effects for charged particles requires to modify the standard definition of the momentum operator via the canonical momentum of a particle towards a more inclusive definition, where this operator is associated with the vector sum of mechanical and interactional electromagnetic (EM) momenta for a charged particle in the EM field. Some principal implications of this result are discussed.

Quantum phases for electric charges and electric (magnetic) dipoles: physical meaning and implication

Alexander L. Kholmetskii, O. Missevitch, Tolga Yarman

We analyse the physical meaning of quantum phase effects for point-like charges and electric (magnetic) dipoles in an electromagnetic (EM) field. At present, there are known eight effects of such a kind: four of them (the magnetic and electric Aharonov – Bohm phases for electrons, the Aharonov – Casher phase for a moving magnetic dipole and the He – McKellar – Wilkens phase for a moving electric dipole) had been disclosed in 20th century, while four new quantum phases had recently been found by our team (A. L. Kholmetskii, O. V. Missevitch, T. Yarman). In our analysis of physical meaning of these phases, we adopt that a quantum phase for a dipole represents a superposition of quantum phases for each charge, composing the dipole. In this way, we demonstrate the failure of the Schrödinger equation for a charged particle in an EM field to describe new quantum phase effects, when the standard definition of the momentum operator is used. We further show that a consistent description of quantum phase effects for moving particles is achieved under appropriate re-definition of this operator, where the canonical momentum of particle in EM field is replaced by the interactional EM field momentum. Some implications of this result are discussed.

Quantum phases for moving charges and dipoles in an electromagnetic field and fundamental equations of quantum mechanics

Alexander L. Kholmetskii, Tolga Yarman, O. Missevitch +1 more

We analyze the quantum phase effects for point-like charges and electric (magnetic) dipoles under a natural assumption that the observed phase for a dipole represents the sum of corresponding phases for charges composing this dipole. This way we disclose two novel quantum phases for charged particles, which we named as complementary electric Aharonov-Bohm (A-B) phase and complementary magnetic A-B phase, respectively. We reveal that these phases are derived from the Schrödinger equation only in the case, where the operator of momentum is re-defined via the replacement of the canonical momentum of particle by the sum of its mechanical momentum and interactional field momentum for a system of charged particles. The related alteration should be introduced to Klein-Gordon and Dirac equations, too, and implications of this modification are discussed.

Quantum phase effects for electrically charged particles: Updated analysis

Alexander L. Kholmetskii, Tolga Yarman, O. Missevitch

Abstract We present an updated analysis of the total expression for the Aharonov-Bohm (AB) phase of a charged particle in an electromagnetic field, which we previously obtained through the superposition principle for quantum phases of charges and dipoles ( Sci. Rep. , 8 (2018) 11937), and here we re-derive it directly in the framework of the general approach, when the source, the electromagnetic field and the charged particle are quantized. The disclosure of the full set of quantum phase effects for a moving charged particle allows an important update of the wave-particle duality concept by generalizing the de Broglie relationship, where the wave vector associated with the particle is proportional to the vector sum of the mechanical and interactional electromagnetic momenta.

Role of electromagnetic energy and momentum in the Aharonov–Bohm effect

Alexander L. Kholmetskii, O. Missevitch, Tolga Yarman

We analyse the physical meaning of the Aharonov–Bohm (AB) phase based on its representation through electromagnetic (EM) potentials as a sum of four components, which, in addition to the known electric and magnetic phase components, contains two more terms recently disclosed by our team in the analysis of quantum phase effects for dipoles and charges, and which we named the complementary electric AB phase and the complementary magnetic AB phase. Using the complete expression for the AB phase, we reveal that the phase component, explicitly depending on time, is determined by the interactional electric energy, while the phase component, explicitly depending on the velocity of charge, is determined by the interactional EM momentum for an isolated system ‘source of EM field and charge’. These findings shed new light on the origin of the AB phase and, in particular, allow us to generalize the de Broglie relationship and the Heisenberg uncertainty relations for a charged particle in an EM field.

Quantum phases for a charged particle and electric/magnetic dipole in an electromagnetic field

Alexander L. Kholmetskii, Tolga Yarman

We point out that the known quantum phases for an electric/magnetic dipole moving in an electromagnetic field must be composed from more fundamental quantum phases emerging for moving elementary charges. Using this idea, we have found two new fundamental quantum phases, next to the known magnetic and electric Aharonov-Bohm phases, and discuss their general properties and physical meaning.

Klein–Gordon equation for electrically charged particles with new energy-momentum operator

Alexander L. Kholmetskii, Tolga Yarman, O. Missevitch

We address the Klein–Gordon equation for a spinless charged particle in the presence of an electromagnetic (EM) field, and focus on its known shortcoming, related to the existence of solutions with a negative probability density. We disclose a principal way to overcome this shortcoming, using our recent results obtained in the analysis of quantum phase effects for charges and dipoles, which prove the need to abandon the customary definition of the momentum operator for a charged particle in an EM field through its canonical momentum, and to adopt the more general definition of this operator through the sum of mechanical and EM momenta for the system ‘charged particle in an EM field’. We show that the application of the new energy-momentum operator to the Klein–Gordon equation actually eliminates solutions with negative probability density. Some implications of the obtained results are discussed.
