Abstract

Fiber-based entangled photon sources are a key resource in emerging quantum technologies due to compactness, long-term stability and alignment-free operation. Fast control of the quantum state properties is also necessary in practical scenarios, where a universal source can be employed with different temporal and spectral configurations. Here, we report on a flexible source design that produces high-quality entanglement from continuous-wave up to GHz-pulsed operation modes. Our approach uses off-the-shelf optical components in a Sagnac configuration to generate polarization-entangled photon pairs at telecom wavelength. This design further allows phase modulation above MHz speeds with high fidelity. Together with its 60 nm spectral bandwidth, the proposed system is entirely suitable for wavelength-multiplexed and reconfigurable quantum networks, where state modulation or active bandwidth allocation is required.

GHz-pulsed source of entangled photons for reconfigurable quantum networks

Meritxell Cabrejo‐Ponce, Christopher Spiess, André Luiz Marques Muniz +2 more

Abstract Entanglement is a universal resource in quantum networks, yet entangled photon sources are typically custom-made for a specific use case. Versatility, both in terms of state modulation and tunability of the temporal properties of the photons, is the key to flexible network architectures and cryptographic primitives that go beyond quantum key distribution. Here, we report on a flexible source design that produces high-quality entanglement in continuous-wave and GHz-rate-pulsed operation modes. Utilizing off-the-shelf optical components, our approach uses a fiber-based Sagnac loop to generate polarization-entangled photons at telecom wavelength with high efficiency and fidelities above 0.99. Phase modulation up to GHz before entangled state generation is also possible for fast entangled state switching. We show phase modulation at 100 MHz with an average fidelity of 0.95. Furthermore, the source 60 nm spectral bandwidth is entirely compatible with fully reconfigurable wavelength-multiplexed quantum networks.

High-brightness fiber-based Sagnac source of entangled photon pairs for multiplexed quantum networks

Tess Troisi, Yoann Pelet, Romain Dalidet +4 more

A fully fibered source of entangled photon pairs based on a nonlinear Sagnac interferometer is reported. Operating at telecom wavelengths, the source relies exclusively on standard fiber-optic components and periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguides, resulting in a compact, robust, and field-deployable architecture. The generation stage supports both polarization and energy-time entanglement without modification, enabling versatile operation depending on the targeted application. Broadband spontaneous parametric down-conversion allows dense wavelength-division multiplexing over the telecom C and L bands. High normalized brightness (10.3 kpairs/s/nm/mW$^2$) is achieved on a standard 100 GHz ITU channel pair, together with high entanglement quality. Polarization and energy-time encodings are characterized through state tomography and two-photon interference measurements, yielding fidelities, purities, and visibilities exceeding 96 % over multiple wavelength channels. The stability and reproducibility of the source are further evaluated through long-duration operation in a network environment. These results demonstrate that the proposed Sagnac source constitutes a practical and scalable building block for future plug-and-play quantum communication and quantum networking platforms.

Three-color Sagnac source of polarization-entangled photon pairs

Michael Hentschel, Hannes Hübel, Andreas Poppe +1 more

We demonstrate a compact and stable source of polarization-entangled pairs of photons, one at 810 nm wavelength for high detection efficiency and the other at 1550 nm for long-distance fiber communication networks. Due to a novel Sagnac-based design of the interferometer no active stabilization is needed. Using only one 30 mm ppKTP bulk crystal the source produces photons with a spectral brightness of 1.13 x 10(6) pairs/s/mW/THz with an entanglement fidelity of 98.2%. Both photons are single-mode fiber coupled and ready to be used in quantum key distribution (QKD) or transmission of photonic quantum states over large distances.

Broadband Telecom Entanglement from an All-Fiber Type-0 Sagnac Source

Alessandro Cestelli, Spyridon Grountas, Scott Mc Haffie +3 more

We demonstrate a compact, practical all-fiber source of non-degenerate telecom-band polarization-entangled photon pairs assembled from off-the-shelf components. The compact fiber-integrated architecture is designed to be affordable, straightforward to assemble and align, and compatible with existing optical-fiber infrastructure. Photon pairs are generated through type-0 spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a pigtailed periodically poled lithium-niobate waveguide embedded in a Sagnac interferometer. At 0.5 mW pump power, quantum-state tomography yields a Bell-state fidelity $F_{Φ^-}=0.850$, purity $P=0.836$, and concurrence $C=0.782$. A separate CHSH measurement gives $S=2.3301\pm0.0075$. The measured Bell-state fidelity is sufficient for the reconstructed polarization state to support qubit teleportation above the classical fidelity limit under ideal protocol operations. Analysis of the density matrix shows that approximately 96.7% of the population remains in the desired $|HH\rangle$-$|VV\rangle$ subspace, with a normalized coherence of approximately 0.86. A residual relative-phase offset indicates that local phase compensation could increase the Bell-state fidelity to approximately 0.8865. We further characterize the brightness--quality trade-off and obtain a corrected pair-rate slope of $(0.918\pm0.040)$ Mcps mW$^{-1}$. The broadband emission and fiber interfaces offer a route to multiuser entanglement distribution through off-the-shelf multichannel wavelength-division multiplexers with passbands matched to the signal and idler wavelengths.

Sagnac-type entangled photon source using only conventional polarization optics

Youn Seok Lee, Mengyu Xie, Ramy Tannous +1 more

Abstract We designed and implemented a novel combination of a Sagnac-interferometer with a Mach–Zehnder interferometer for a source of polarization-entangled photons. The new versatile configuration does not require multi-wavelength polarization optics, yet it performs with a good polarization quality and phase-stability over a wide wavelength range. We demonstrate the interferometer using only standard commercial optics to experimentally realize the pulsed generation of polarization-entangled photon-pairs at wavelengths of 764 nm and 1221 nm via type-I spontaneous four-wave mixing in a polarization-maintaining fiber. Polarization entanglement was verified by a polarization-correlation measurement with a visibility of 95.5% from raw coincidence counts and the violation of the Clauser–Horne–Shimony–Holt (CHSH) inequality with S = 2.70 ± 0.04. The long-term phase-stability was characterized by an Allan deviation of 8° over an integration time of about 1 h with no active phase-stabilization.
