Debating quantum theory

Helmut Rauch

Quantum mechanics has been the subject of vigorous debate ever since it was developed in the 1920s. However, over the last few decades new experimental techniques have been developed that enable many seemingly "mystic"quantum phenomena to be witnessed at the everyday level. Everything from how the universe evolves to the stability of atoms and biological substances is based on the rules of quantum mechanics. And although the theory might not strike us as intuitive, we can nevertheless use it to calculate the properties of matter and radiation with incredible accuracy.

From quantum chemistry to quantum biology: a path toward consciousness

Jack A. Tuszyński

This paper presents a historical overview of quantum physics methodology's development and application to various science fields beyond physics, especially biology and consciousness. Following a successful interpretation of several early 20t⁢h century experiments, quantum physics gradually provided a conceptual framework for molecular bonds via quantum chemistry. In recent years individual biological phenomena such as photosynthesis and bird navigation have been experimentally and theoretically analyzed using quantum methods, building conceptual foundations for quantum physics' entry into biology. Quantum concepts have also been recently employed to explain physiology's allometric scaling laws by introducing quantum metabolism theory. In the second part of this work, we discuss how quantum physics may also be pivotal to our understanding of consciousness, which has been touted by some researchers as the last frontier of modern science. Others believe that consciousness does not belong within the realm of science at all. Several hypotheses, especially the Orch OR theory, have been suggested over the past two decades to introduce a scientific basis to consciousness theory. We discuss the merits and potential extensions of these approaches.

The Possibility of Quantum Medicine in Cancer Research: A Review

Mahsa Faramarzpour, Mohammadreza Ghaderinia, Hamed Abadijoo +1 more

There is no doubt that quantum mechanics has become one of the building blocks of our physical world today. It is one of the most rapidly growing fields of science that can potentially change every aspect of our life. Quantum biology is one of the most essential parts of this era which can be considered as a game-changer in medicine especially in the field of cancer. Despite quantum biology having gained more attention during the last decades, there are still so many unanswered questions concerning cancer biology and so many unpaved roads in this regard. This review paper is an effort to answer the question of how biological phenomena such as cancer can be described through the quantum mechanical framework. In other words, is there a correlation between cancer biology and quantum mechanics, and how? This literature review paper reports on the recently published researches based on the principles of quantum physics with focus on cancer biology and metabolism.
