Abstract

Abstract: Quantum Natural Language Processing is the implementation of NLP algorithms on quantum hardware or alternatively on hybrid quantum-classical hardware. NLP has been a heavily researched and implemented topic of the past few decades and the most recent developments using new techniques and the power of deep learning have made huge strides in the field. But for all this new development, there is a looming possibility of greater achievements in the form of the rising field of quantum computing which is yet to see its potential come to fruition. A gaping hole in the implementation process of NLP systems is the computing power required to train deep learning and Natural Language Processing models which makes the development of such models time consuming and power hungry. The huge leap in parallel computing power that quantum computers provide gives us immense opportunities to accelerate the training of deep and complex models. Such techniques will help organizations with access to quantum hardware to be able to use quantum circuits to either train a complete model or use a classical system like the norm but outsource all of the most computationally heavy part of the process to quantum hardware which will provide exponential speed up to the development of conversational AI models. In the past few years, quantum computing and natural language processing (NLP) have converged with encouraging results into a new discipline called quantum natural language processing (QNLP). It is an interdisciplinary branch of science that seeks to apply quantum mechanics to aspects of language processing. It includes theoretical investigations as well as practical implementations on classical or quantum hardware. In addition, this chapter gives a summary of QNLP by classifying it in terms of its theoretical or hardware implementation, NLP tasks targeted, and evaluation resources employed. Furthermore, it analyzes how QNLP improves on existing methods in terms of performance and methodology, while considering its contribution to future NLP tasks that rely on currently practiced deep learning approaches. This review concludes by examining the key success factors in extant QNLP research, along with gaps and future directions.

Quantum Techniques for Optimizing Algorithms in Natural Language Processing

Dalydas Karanath, Udai Shankar

This research paper explores how Natural Language Processing (NLP) algorithms can be enhanced through the use of quantum computing. Since NLP applications such as sentiment analysis, text classification, and machine translation analyze huge volumes of data, the amount of resourceconsuming work for traditional computing architectures, including large scale language models, becomes excessive. There is an opportunity for significant improvements in speed and efficiency because of the quantum properties of superposition and entanglement. This research explores the use of quantum algorithms such as Grover's search, quantum machine learning algorithms, and quantum-inspired tensor networks for alleviating computational NLP bottlenecks. The comparative study of the quantum approach against the classical method shows notable speedup in theory with an explanation of the implementation of quantum algorithms on Noisy IntermediateScale Quantum (NISQ) devices. The most promising NLP algorithm enhancement will most likely come from hybrid quantum-classical sophisticated architectures as discovered through this study, where quantum processing is applied to some components and classical processing is used for the rest of the quantum-classical NLP algorithms. This is the first research study in Quantum Natural Language Processing (QNLP) for real world NLP applications and the author is commended for their efforts.

Quantum Natural Language Processing: Challenges and Opportunities

Raffaele Guarasci, Giuseppe De Pietro, Massimo Esposito

The meeting between Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Quantum Computing has been very successful in recent years, leading to the development of several approaches of the so-called Quantum Natural Language Processing (QNLP). This is a hybrid field in which the potential of quantum mechanics is exploited and applied to critical aspects of language processing, involving different NLP tasks. Approaches developed so far span from those that demonstrate the quantum advantage only at the theoretical level to the ones implementing algorithms on quantum hardware. This paper aims to list the approaches developed so far, categorizing them by type, i.e., theoretical work and those implemented on classical or quantum hardware; by task, i.e., general purpose such as syntax-semantic representation or specific NLP tasks, like sentiment analysis or question answering; and by the resource used in the evaluation phase, i.e., whether a benchmark dataset or a custom one has been used. The advantages offered by QNLP are discussed, both in terms of performance and methodology, and some considerations about the possible usage QNLP approaches in the place of state-of-the-art deep learning-based ones are given.

Natural Language Processing With Hybrid Quantum Neural Networks

Manju Lata Joshi

The recent developments in the field of deep learning have made Natural Language Processing (NLP) quite useful, but there are still issues of the complexity of computation, energy consumption, and modeling of complex semantics. Representations and optimization techniques that are quantum enhanced are available in quantum computing and provide new possibilities. Hybrid Quantum Neural Networks (HQNNs) combine quantum computational concepts and classical neural networks, allowing the introduction of a new era in intelligent language processing. The chapter provides the basics of quantum computing and neural NLP models and looks at the hybrid methods of semantic representation and learning. The text classification, sentiment analysis, named entity recognition, and machine translation tasks that are fundamental to NLP are examined through a hybrid quantum-neural approach. Such methods as quantum data encoding, quantum feature extraction and hybrid training approaches are described and the issues associated with scalability, noise, and hardware limitations are discussed.

Grammar-Aware Question-Answering on Quantum Computers.

Konstantinos Meichanetzidis, Alexis Toumi, Giovanni de Felice +1 more

Natural language processing (NLP) is at the forefront of great advances in contemporary AI, and it is arguably one of the most challenging areas of the field. At the same time, with the steady growth of quantum hardware and notable improvements towards implementations of quantum algorithms, we are approaching an era when quantum computers perform tasks that cannot be done on classical computers with a reasonable amount of resources. This provides a new range of opportunities for AI, and for NLP specifically. Earlier work has already demonstrated a potential quantum advantage for NLP in a number of manners: (i) algorithmic speedups for search-related or classification tasks, which are the most dominant tasks within NLP, (ii) exponentially large quantum state spaces allow for accommodating complex linguistic structures, (iii) novel models of meaning employing density matrices naturally model linguistic phenomena such as hyponymy and linguistic ambiguity, among others. In this work, we perform the first implementation of an NLP task on noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) hardware. Sentences are instantiated as parameterised quantum circuits. We encode word-meanings in quantum states and we explicitly account for grammatical structure, which even in mainstream NLP is not commonplace, by faithfully hard-wiring it as entangling operations. This makes our approach to quantum natural language processing (QNLP) particularly NISQ-friendly. Our novel QNLP model shows concrete promise for scalability as the quality of the quantum hardware improves in the near future.

Quantum Natural Language Processing: A Comprehensive Review of Models, Methods, and Applications

Farha Nausheen, Khandakar Entenam Unayes Ahmed, Mumit Khan +1 more

In recent developments, deep learning methodologies applied to Natural Language Processing (NLP) have revealed a paradox: They improve performance but demand considerable data and resources for their training. Alternatively, quantum computing exploits the principles of quantum mechanics to overcome the computational limitations of current methodologies, thereby establishing an emerging field known as quantum natural language processing (QNLP). This domain holds the potential to attain a quantum advantage in the processing of linguistic structures, surpassing classical models in both efficiency and accuracy. In this paper, it is proposed to categorise QNLP models based on quantum computing principles, architecture, and computational approaches. This paper attempts to provide a survey on how quantum meets language by mapping state-of-the-art in this area, embracing quantum encoding techniques for classical data, QNLP models for prevalent NLP tasks, and quantum optimisation techniques for hyper parameter tuning. The landscape of quantum computing approaches applied to various NLP tasks is summarised by showcasing the specific QNLP methods used, and the popularity of these methods is indicated by their count. From the findings, it is observed that QNLP approaches are still limited to small data sets, with only a few models explored extensively, and there is increasing interest in the application of quantum computing to natural language processing tasks.
