Histories of Neutrino Oscillation of Consistency Induced by the Presence of Normal Matter

Abstract

Oscillation of two-flavour neutrinos is considered within a quantum mechanical framework of consistent (decoherent) dynamic histories. We investigate how consistency of selected three-time histories is affected by oscillation parameters. We show that the presence of normal matter is crucial to maintain consistency of certain classes of neutrinos’ dynamic histories and that the consistency does not depend on a Majorana phase and remains insensitive to a potential CP violation.

Consistency of Histories of Neutrino Oscillation in the Presence of Normal Matter and Continuous Non-Selective Measurement

Fazeel Khan, Jerzy Dajka

Two-flavor neutrino oscillation is analyzed using the consistent histories approach. We identify the properties of neutrinos and the oscillation conditions, such as the presence of matter or the impact of measurement, that ensure the consistency of three-time neutrino histories. The connection between the consistency of these histories and the well-known CP violation explored in this study serves as a specific example.

Study of coherence and mixedness in meson and neutrino systems

Khushboo Dixit, Javid Naikoo, Subhashish Banerjee +1 more

We study the interplay between coherence and mixedness in meson and neutrino systems. The dynamics of the meson system is treated using the generic decoherence model taking into account the decaying nature of the system. Neutrino dynamics is studied in the context of three flavour oscillations within the framework of a decoherence model recently used in the context of LSND (Liquid Scintillator Neutrino Detector) experiment. For meson systems, the decoherence effect is negligible in the limit of zero CP violation. Interestingly, the average mixedness increases with time for about one lifetime of these particles. For neutrino system, in the context of the model considered, the decoherence effect is maximum for neutrino energy around 30 MeV. Further, the effect of CP violating phase is found to decrease (increase) the coherence in the upper $$0< \delta < \pi $$ (lower $$\pi< \delta < 2\pi $$ ) half plane.

Quantum decoherence effect and neutrino oscillation

C. P. Sun, Dong Zhou

In the view of the quantum dynamic theory of measurement developed from the Hepp-Colemen (HC) model (K. Hepp, Hev.Phys.Acta, {\bf 45}, 237 (1972)), the quantum decoherence in neutrino flavor oscillation caused by an environment surrounding neutrinos is generally considered in this paper. The Ellis, Hagelin, Nanopoulos and Srednicki (EHNS) mechanism for solving the solar neutrino problem can be comprehended in a framework of the ordinary quantum mechanics. In the weak- coupling limit, a microscopic model is proposed to describe the transition of two neutrino system from a pure state to a mixed state. It gives the modified formula of survival probability of neutrino oscillation with two additional time-dependent parameters. For specified environments, this result shows that the oscillating phenomena of neutrino still exist even without a mass difference in free neutrino.

Neutrino Oscillations in the Presence of Matter and Continuous Non-Selective Measurement

Fazeel Khan, Jerzy Dajka

We investigate three-flavor neutrino oscillation affected by an environment mimicking a continuous non-selective measurement. We show that such a coupling that is given by a measured observable affects probability of inter-flavor neutrino transition and a steady-state correlation function of the neutrino’s flavor. We juxtapose and compare our predictions influenced by matter’s scattering and CP-violation.

Wavepacket Localization, Evolution and Decoherence in Neutrino Oscillations

Emilio Ciuffoli

I will present some of the results obtained regarding the emergence of decoherence in neutrino oscillations. In our model all the particles, including the source and detector, are treated dynamically and evolved consistently with Quantum Field Theory; decoherence can emerge naturally given the time evolution of the initial state and the final state considered. We have shown that some of the assumptions commonly used in the literature, such as the covariance of the wavepackets, are inconsistent. We found that a crucial ingredient for decoherence is the localization in space-time of the neutrino creation and detection: in Nature, such a measurement is usually carried out by environmental interactions, however it could also be approximated by considering localized wavefunctions in the final state. On the other hand, if the environmental interactions are not present (for example, if the decay happens in vacuum), the final position of the daughter particles will not be measured, i.e. they will be described by plane waves instead: in this case the neutrino is not localized either, and we don't have decoherence. A consequence of the time-evolution is that a Gaussian wavepacket will gradually spread: I will show that such an effect could in principle affect decoherence; moreover it would depend on the absolute mass scale of the neutrino, not on the $\Delta m^2$, which could offer a possible way to probe such a parameter by studying the neutrino oscillations.

Quantum correlations in two-flavour neutrino oscillations

Ashutosh Kumar Alok, Subhashish Banerjee, Sankagiri Uma Sankar

Neutrino oscillations provide evidence for the mode entanglement of neutrino mass eigenstates in a given flavour eigenstate. Given this mode entanglement, it is pertinent to ask if other quantum correlations are present in neutrino evolution. In this study, we compute a number of such correlations for accelerator neutrinos in the approximation of two flavour nu_{mu} nu_{tau} oscillations. The point of minimum survival probability corresponds to the extremum point of all measures of quantum correlations. We find that Bell's inequality is always violated.
