Amplitude noise of injection locked lasers: Quantum theory using a linearised input/output method

Timothy C. Ralph, C. C. Harb, Hans‐A. Bachor

The search for ever quieter light sources has fueled experimental interest in the noise properties of injection locked lasers [ 1,2,3], Ref. 1 showed that the injection of a small signal into a pump noise suppressed semi-conductor laser could suppress small longitudinal side modes whilst leaving the non-classical noise characteristics of the free running laser unaffected. In contrast [2] and [3] found that in Nd:YAG lasers the free running noise characteristics were suppressed and the output noise was an amplified version of the injected signal.

Lasers with three-level absorbers

Govind Prasad Agrawal

Output characteristics of a traveling-wave monomode laser with an intracavity three-level absorber are investigated. The laser frequency is assumed to be symmetrically detuned from the two ground-state sublevels for a $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$-type transition scheme. It is shown that bistability and hysteresis in the laser output, characteristics of a first-order phase transition, may arise much before the absorber saturates. For this reason, bistability may be observed even if the gain medium saturates faster than the absorber, in contrast with the case of a two-level saturable absorber. The physical mechanism for bistable behavior is coherent population trapping which accumulates all absorbing atoms in the ground-state sublevels with a sharp decrease in absorption.

Theoretical Modeling and Analysis of Blue Laser Characteristics of Continuous-Wave Single-Wavelength Two-Photon Pumped Rb-Vapor Laser

Yanhui Ji, Yang He, Haohua Wan +2 more

Based on an analysis of kinetic processes in the continuous-wave (CW) single-wavelength two-photon pumped Rb-vapor laser (Rb-TPAL), a three-dimensional computational model is established using the rate equation. Based on the application of the model to cavity-enhanced Rb-TPAL [Yuanet al.,Optics Express29, 4858 (2021)], the calculated and measured dependences of the laser power on the pump power show good agreement. We simulate the Rb-TPAL pumped by a high-power CW laser diode and analyze the effects of temperature, vapor cell length, pump waist, vapor cell transmission, and output mirror reflectance on the characteristics of the blue laser. The results suggest that the output power and efficiency of blue laser can be improved by optimizing the above parameters; however, the particles in the$5^{2}\text{D}_{5/2}$level face difficulty to transition to the$6^{2}\text{P}_{3/2}$level, and this limits the further improvement of blue laser efficiency; therefore, an approach is proposed to improve the efficiency of Rb-TPAL. This study can be useful for designing a two-photon pumped alkali metal laser with high-power output.
