A GenAlg Optimization of Length-Scalable QC-LDPC Codes

Abstract

In this paper, we propose an optimization scheme of quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check (QC-LDPC) codes based on an evolutionary algorithm, the Genetic Algorithm (GenAlg). By changing the positions and shift values of non-negative entries in the base matrix, the optimized codes can achieve better decoding performances. The optimized construction of the base matrix compatible for multiple lengths with different lifting sizes is discussed and a statistic metric used to measure the effectiveness of optimization is introduced to quantitatively evaluate the decoding performances with different code lengths. Simulation results of the proposed GenAlg optimized QC-LDPC codes with different lengths can significantly outperform those of the codes in various existing standards.

Genetic optimization of non-binary quasi-cyclic LDPC codes

Zhang Yidi, Jiang Ming, Zhao Chun-ming

This paper proposes a genetic optimization method for the construction of non-binary quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check (NB-QC-LDPC) codes with short block lengths. In our scheme, the initial template base matrices and the corresponding non-binary replacement matrices are constructed by the progressive edge growth algorithm and randomly generated, respectively. The genetic algorithm is then utilized to optimize the base matrices and the replacement ones. The simulation results show that the NB-QC-LDPC codes constructed by the proposed method achieve better decoding performance and lower implementation complexity compared to the existing NB-LDPC codes such as consultative committee for space data system and BeiDou satellite navigation system.

Decoder-in-the-Loop: Genetic Optimization-Based LDPC Code Design

Ahmed Elkelesh, Moustafa Ebada, Sebastian Cammerer +2 more

LDPC code design tools typically rely on asymptotic code behavior and are affected by an unavoidable performance degradation due to model imperfections in the short length regime. We propose an LDPC code design scheme based on an evolutionary algorithm, the Genetic Algorithm (GenAlg), implementing a “decoder-in-the-loop” concept. It inherently takes into consideration the channel, code length and the number of iterations while optimizing the error-rate of the actual decoder hardware architecture. We construct short length LDPC codes (i.e., the parity-check matrix) with error-rate performance comparable to, or even outperforming that of well-designed standardized short length LDPC codes over both AWGN and Rayleigh fading channels. Our proposed algorithm can be used to design LDPC codes with special graph structures (e.g., accumulator-based codes) to facilitate the encoding step, or to satisfy any other practical requirement. Moreover, GenAlg can be used to design LDPC codes with the aim of reducing decoding latency and complexity, leading to coding gains of up to 0.325 dB and 0.8 dB at BLER of 10-5for both AWGN and Rayleigh fading channels, respectively, when compared to state-of-the-art short LDPC codes. Also, we analyze what can be learned from the resulting codes and, as such, the GenAlg particularly highlights design paradigms of short length LDPC codes (e.g., codes with degree-1 variable nodes obtain very good results).

Efficient Construction of Quasi-Cyclic LDPC Codes With Multiple Lifting Sizes

Huaan Li, Hengzhou Xu, Chao Chen +1 more

In this letter, we present an efficient method for constructing a family of quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check (QC-LDPC) codes specified only by one single exponent matrix that can support multiple lifting sizes. Our method adopts the small-lifting-size-first design strategy and the resulting exponent matrix of larger lifting size has non-decreasing girth. Numerical results show that all constituent codes can perform as well as (outperform) the CCSDS (5G) LDPC codes over the AWGN channel with the iterative decoding algorithms. This fact demonstrates the feasibility and validity of our proposed method and makes it competitive in some applications, e.g., enhancing short and medium-length LDPC codes to support longer length.

Quasi-Cyclic Low-Density Parity-Check Codes Based on Progressive Cycle Growth Algorithm

Yuanhua Liu, Meiling Zhang, Niu Xin-Liang

Short cycles in the Tanner graph of a given LDPC code has negative effect on the performance of iterative decoding. To improve the performance, we presented an approach for constructing Quasi-Cyclic Low-Density Parity-Check (QC-LDPC) codes whose associated Tanner graph has large girth and a small amount of short cycles. Each column block of the parity check matrix was designed by adding circulant permutation sub-matrices one after another, provided the current parity check matrix has minimal number of short cycles. The condition for the proposed QC-LDPC codes to have girth at least 6 was also analyzed. Regular and irregular QC-LDPC codes with various lengths and rates can be constructed. Simulations show that the proposed QC-LDPC codes have less short cycles and better performance than existing progressive edge growth based QC-LDPC codes.

Design of good quasi-cyclic LDPC codes

Xu Dan

The existing design of quasi-cyclic(QC) low-density parity-check(LDPC) codes has not considered the problems of short length girths and the rows' dependency. The first problem leads to the BER performance of QC LDPC codes to be much poorer than that of randomly constructed LDPC codes, while the second problem leads to the difficulty of construction of generator matrices from parity-check matrices. To solve the first problem, the constraint conditions for designing the QC LDPC codes are proposed, and the dimension and shift factors of the circulant matrices of the given sparse parity-check matrix are adjusted according to the test results of both girth 4 and girth 6.To solve the second problem,an approach of irregular QC LDPC codes is proposed. The proposed approach is to replace some sub-matrices by zero matrices and identity matrices at special positions in the given sparse parity-check matrix so as to get a nonsingular square matrix for the construction of the generator matrix.Though adopting bidiagonal submatrices in parity-check matrix can solve the rows' dependency problem, many code words with low weights will occur, which leads to the BER performance can not be better by increasing code lengths.Examples are provided for the proposed design of QC LDPC codes, and computer simulation results show that the proposed QC LDPC codes achieve good BER performance.

On the Construction of Multitype Quasi-Cyclic Low-Density Parity-Check Codes With Different Girth and Length

Farzaneh Abedi, Mohammad Gholami

Multitype quasi-cyclic (QC) low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes are a class of protograph LDPC codes lifted cyclically from protographs with multiple edges, represented by two weight and slope matrices. For a given weight-matrix, an approach is proposed to find the maximum-achievable girth$g_{\max }$of the corresponding multitype QC-LDPC codes by some inevitable chains having less complexity than the existing methods. This advantage leads to some new patterns of the weight matrices such that the corresponding codes have some improvements in terms of the maximum-achievable girths or the minimum-distance upper-bounds. In continue, for a given weight-matrix with maximum-achievable girth$g_{\max }$, some slope-matrices are constructed by a depth-first search algorithm for which the corresponding multitype QC-LDPC codes with even girth$g$,$g\le g_{\max }$, have smaller lengths, higher rates, or larger minimum-distances than the state-of-the-art achievements. Simulation results show that the constructed codes have some error-rate advantages than PEG, random-like, CCSDS, and 802.11n/ac IEEE standard LDPC codes.
