Abstract

In this study, we investigate the evolution of vortex in harmonically trapped two-component coupled Bose–Einstein condensate with quintic-order nonlinearity. We derive the vortex solution of this two-component system based on the coupled quintic-order Gross–Pitaevskii equation model and the variational method. It is found that the evolution of vortex is a metastable state. The radius of vortex soliton shrinks and expands with time, resulting in periodic breathing oscillation, and the angular frequency of the breathing oscillation is twice the value of the harmonic trapping frequency under infinitesimal nonlinear strength. At the same time, it is also found that the higher-order nonlinear term has a quantitative effect rather than a qualitative impact on the oscillation period. With practical experimental setting, we identify the quasi-stable oscillation of the derived vortex evolution mode and illustrated its features graphically. The theoretical results developed in this work can be used to guide the experimental observation of the vortex phenomenon in ultracold coupled atomic systems with quintic-order nonlinearity.

Dynamic evolution of vortex solitons for coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in harmonic potential trap

We studied the evolution of vortex solitons in two-component coupled Bose-Einstein condensates trapped in a harmonic potential. Using a two-dimensional coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equation model and a variational method, we theoretically derived the vortex soliton solution. Under an appropriate parametric setting, the derived vortex soliton radius was found to oscillate periodically. The derived quasi-stable states with typical nonlinear features are pictorially demonstrated and can be used to guide relevant experimental observations of vortex soliton phenomena in coupled ultracold atomic systems.

Solitary vortex dynamics of two-dimensional harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensates with higher-order nonlinear interactions

Ying Wang, Yang Yang

We studied the evolutionary patterns of two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates incorporating higher-order nonlinear interactions in harmonic potential. Using the Gross-Pitaevskii equation model with higher-order nonlinear corrections, we derived the analytical solitary vortex solutions via the variational method. The impact of the higher-order nonlinear interaction on the vortex dynamics is quantitatively analyzed, showing its key nonlinear feature contribution in the asymmetric vortex evolution with more precise evolutionary pattern generated. We found that, for the circular symmetric solution, if the nonlinear strength is not high, the higher-order nonlinear corrections essentially have only a tiny perturbative effect on the system’s quasi-static oscillation state, whereas for asymmetric evolution of the solitary vortex, incorporating higher-order corrections will generate an evolution pattern that better matches the results of numerical simulation. The theoretical results derived here can be used to guide relevant experimental studies of higher-order nonlinear effects in ultracold atomic systems.

We study the evolution of vortex solitons in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) trapped with harmonic potential. Based on the Gross-Pitaevskii equation model and variational method, We derived the analytical vortex soliton solution that is stable under certain parametric setting. The evolutionary pattern of the vortex soliton is pictorially demonstrated showing the periodic oscillatory behavior of the systems’s distribution width. The theoretical results obtained can be used to guide corresponding vortex soliton observation in two-component BEC systems.

Asymmetric vortex dynamics in two-dimensional Bose–Einstein condensate with harmonic trap potential

Chenghao Li, Zhengliang Liu, Yuan Ren +4 more

Based on the two-dimensional Gross–Pitaevskii equation model, we investigated the asymmetric vortex evolution of two-dimensional Bose–Einstein condensates in a harmonic potential trap with polar direction perturbation. This corresponds to the generation of an asymmetric vortex evolution mode under initial vortex light manipulation together with polar direction perturbation. Unlike most of the prior work on this topic that uses a pure numerical method for the system under study, we use an exact analytical method rather than numerical simulation to investigate the key features of the system evolution dynamics in this study. Based on the variational method, and for different system parameter settings including the strength of the harmonic oscillator potential and the nonlinear interaction, we derived two evolution modes, namely, the periodic evolution oscillation mode and the monotonic decay mode, and pictorially demonstrated the evolution patterns of the system. In addition, we investigated the scenario when the system is in the rotating state, which corresponds to the action of the quadratic centrifugal potential. Notably, we also identified the damping effects for the two modes with increasing angular velocity, whose upper limit value corresponds to the constant vortex pattern of the system. Our theoretical results can be used to guide the experimental investigation of asymmetric vortex evolution in two-dimensional Bose–Einstein condensates.

Asymmetric solitary vortex evolution in two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate in harmonic trap

Ying Wang, Dongpo Song, Yang Yang +2 more

We studied the evolution of an asymmetric solitary vortex in a two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate starting from a quasi-one dimensional state with external harmonic trapping potential modulation. We derived the analytical solution of the asymmetric solitary vortex based on the two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation model and variational method. Furthermore, we identified the oscillation mode between the extreme asymmetric state and circular symmetric state for the derived solitary vortex. The obtained theoretical results can be used as guides for relevant experimental studies of asymmetric solitary vortices under similar physical conditions.

Vortex dynamics in cubic-quintic Bose-Einstein condensates

Thudiyangal Mithun, Kuppuswamy Porsezian, Bishwajyoti Dey

We study vortex dynamics in a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate with tunable two- and three-body interactions. The dynamics is governed by two-dimensional cubic-quintic Gross-Pitaevskii equation. A time-dependent variational method has been used to obtain critical rotational frequency and surface mode frequency analytically and are compared with numerical simulation results. An imaginary time propagation method and Crank-Nicolson scheme for discretization have been used for numerical simulation. The numerically calculated average value of the angular momentum per particle shows very clearly its dynamical relation with the time development of the vortex formation. The rotational frequency dependence of the variation of average value of the angular momentum per particle with time shows that vortices form much faster in time for higher rotational frequency. Similarly, the vortex forms much faster in time with an increase of the strength of the repulsive three-body interaction. The simulation of the vortex lattice formation in the condensate shows that the presence of the three-body interactions does not alter the vortex lattice pattern but it helps in the shape deformations of the condensate thereby leading to vortex lattice formation. Likewise, the three-body interactions enable the vortex lattice formation in Bose-Einstein condensates even with attractive two-body interactions and in purely quintic BEC.
