Abstract

This work reports pressure-broadening line-wing and line-core of the lithium Li (2 p ← 2 s) resonance line perturbed by ground sodium Na (3s) atoms. In far-wing regions, the calculations are performed quantum-mechanically and are intended to examine the photoabsorption coefficients at diverse temperatures. The results show the existence of three satellites, in the blue wing near the wavelengths 470 nm and in the red wing around 862 nm and 1070 nm. For the line-core region, by adopting the simplified Baranger model, the line-width and line-shift rates are determined, and their variation law with temperature is examined. No published data were found to compare these results with.

Far-wing profile of photoabsorption spectra of Na(3s–3p) atoms perturbed by helium

Kamel Alioua, Moncef Bouledroua, Abdul-Rahman Allouche +1 more

The far wings of the sodium spectra arising from the collisional broadening of the D lines by ground helium atoms are investigated theoretically. The required X2Σ+, A2Π and B2Σ+ potential-energy curves and transition dipole moments have been generated from ab initio CASSCF-MRCI calculations to determine, within the framework of the semiclassical and full quantum-mechanical approaches, the temperature-dependent photoabsorption spectra. The profile is dominated by the free–free transitions at all temperatures ranging from 500 K to 3000 K and the computations show the existence of a satellite structure in the blue wing attributed to the X → B transitions. The satellites occur around the wavelength position 520 nm when the calculations are performed classically and around 528 nm when they are performed quantum mechanically. The results are in good accordance with those produced by other theoretical and experimental works.

Noble-gas broadening of the Li resonance line

Alan C. Gallagher

The normalized fluorescence spectrum of the Li 6708-\AA{} resonance line perturbed by the noble gases has been measured for 100 \AA{} either side of the resonance line, at a temperature of 400 \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{} 10\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}C. The noble-gas pressure range of 100-1800 Torr was investigated. It was observed that the line wings scale linearly with this pressure for $2<|\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\lambda}|<100$ \AA{}, and it was was demonstrated that a Lorentzianbroadened line core can be observed for this pressure range. The Li density was \ensuremath{\sim} ${10}^{10}$/${\mathrm{cm}}^{3}$ and was varied to establish the fluorescence spectrum in the limit of no radiation entrapment. The central region of the line has been measured with high resolution and compared to calculated profiles due to the various fine structure and isotopic line components, each broadened by a convolution of Lorentz, Doppler, and instrumental profiles. The shift and Lorentz broadening rates, as well as the wavelengths for transition to non-Lorentzian behavior, are reported. In contrast to the heavier alkali-metal-noble-gas cases, no distinctive far-wing features such as satellites or sharp inflections are observed. This is consistent with the much larger collision velocities for the Li case.

Broadening and Shifting of the Alkali-Metal Resonance Lines by Collisions of Like Monatoms

Moncef Bouledroua, A. Dalgarno, E Robin

The purpose of this work is the evaluation of the linewidth w and lineshift d of the sodium resonance line 3p − → 3s when the excited atoms are evolving in their parent gas. Assuming the Baranger impact approximation, these two quantities are given in terms of the phase shifts of the ground Na(3s) + Na(3s) and the excited Na(3p)+Na(3s) states. The quantal calculations and the semi-classical method, developed by Mott and Massey and Landau and Lifshitz, show that the cross sections σ and λ vary with the energy like E−1/2, the width w and the shift d do not depend on the temperature, the long-range interactions have a big influence on w and d, and the rate coefficients depend on the dispersion coefficients like w/n ≈ +7.298 × 10−8C3(Σ) and d/n ≈ +8.893 × 10−9C3(Σ). The study also shows that the sodium results can be extended to the other alkali-metal atoms (Li, K, Rb, Cs, and Fr) by a simple scaling. Noble-gas broadening of the 6P122−7S122 (377.6 nm) 6P322−7S122 (535 nm) thallium lines

Bernard Cheron, Richard Scheps, Alan C. Gallagher

The shapes of the thallium (Tl) 535- and 377.6-nm resonance lines broadened by 500-1500 Torr of noble gases have been measured at 743 K. The reported normalized emission intensities yield absorption coefficients in absolute units for all portions of the line. The shift and broadening of the Lorentzian-shaped line cores, the wavelengths of the transition to non-Lorentzian wings, wing shapes, and satellite positions, shapes, and intensities are reported. As an example, a pair of excited and ground-state interaction potentials are given for the Xe case to explain the shift, width, and intensities in all portions of the line wings.

Collision broadening of the Sr-ion resonance line from the line core to the near-wing region

Hisatomo Harima, K. Tachibana, Y. Urano

Profiles of the singly ionized strontium resonance line at 421.6 nm (4p ${\mathrm{}}^{2}$${\mathrm{P}}_{1/2}$--4s ${\mathrm{}}^{2}$${\mathrm{S}}_{1/2}$) which are collisionally broadened by argon have been measured from the line core to near-wing region (within the distance of \ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\nu}\ensuremath{\lesssim}50 ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$ from the line center). The observed broadening rate of the core is (1.87\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.25)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}20}$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$/${\mathrm{cm}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}3}$ at 690 K. A clearly asymmetric profile has been observed in the wing region. These results are discussed by considering semiclassical impact and quasistatic theories combined with theoretical interaction potentials for the ${\mathrm{Sr}}^{+}$-Ar pair which were previously reported by the present authors.

Pressure dependence of Na resonance line broadening by Kr and Xe

W.P. West, Alan C. Gallagher

The fluorescent spectrum of the Na $D$ lines, pressure broadened by Xe and Kr, has been measured for noble-gas densities of 2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{19}$-3\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{20}$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$; at the lower density, the lines are isolated while, at the higher, they are severely blended. The spectra are obtained in normalized intensity units allowing the nonbinary behavior of the line wing intensity to be clearly observed. At the lower density the broadening is well characterized by isolated binary interactions; at the higher density multiple-perturber interactions dominate. Nonlinearities in the pressure dependence of shifts, widths, and satellite shape are reported.
