Hyper-Entanglement: How To Enlarge Your Hilbert Space Without Really Trying

Paul G. Kwiat, Trent Graham

“Hyper-entangled” photon pairs—simultaneously entangled in multiple degrees of freedom—enable new capabilities in quantum information and metrology. We present several examples, including minimal-measurement quantum process tomography and “superdense teleportation”.

Hyper-entangled photon pairs from single quantum dots

Geng Chen, Chuan‐Feng Li, Zhen−Qiang Yin +3 more

We propose a scheme to generate hyper-entangled photon pairs from single quantum dots (SQDs). Single photons emitted by SQD are manipulated to be entangled after post-selection. Crucially, exciton fine-structure splitting, which was previously deemed undesirable in similar schemes, is used here to produce photon pairs entangled in both frequency and polarization degrees of freedom. This hyper-entangled two-photon state is potentially more powerful than a normal entangled state for quantum state engineering and quantum information processing.

Deterministic Preparation of a Hyper‐Entangled Three‐Photon Asymmetric W State Assisted by the Single‐Sided QD‐Cavity System

Li Dong, Liu Lv, Zi‐Long Yang +6 more

Abstract Hyper‐entangled states that encode qubits in multiple degrees of freedom of a quantum system can provide a decisive advantage in quantum information processing, such as improving the capacity of communication and speeding up the computation. Assisted by quantum dots in single‐sided optical microcavities, nonlinear interaction of optical circular polarizations is induced and a deterministic scheme for preparing a three‐photon hyper‐entangled asymmetric W state with polarization degree of freedom and spatial degree of freedom is proposed. The preparing process is composed of three steps: the preparation of a three‐photon polarization entangled asymmetric W state; the preparation of a three‐photon spatial entangled asymmetric W state; the preparation of a three‐photon hyper‐entangled asymmetric W state. It can be generalized to generate a three‐photon general W state according to practical requirement.
