The density-matrix renormalization group

Ulrich Schollwöck

The density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) is a numerical algorithm for the efficient truncation of the Hilbert space of low-dimensional strongly correlated quantum systems based on a rather general decimation prescription. This algorithm has achieved unprecedented precision in the description of one-dimensional quantum systems. It has therefore quickly become the method of choice for numerical studies of such systems. Its applications to the calculation of static, dynamic, and thermodynamic quantities in these systems are reviewed here. The potential of DMRG applications in the fields of two-dimensional quantum systems, quantum chemistry, three-dimensional small grains, nuclear physics, equilibrium and nonequilibrium statistical physics, and time-dependent phenomena is also discussed. This review additionally considers the theoretical foundations of the method, examining its relationship to matrix-product states and the quantum information content of the density matrices generated by the DMRG.

Time‐dependent density matrix renormalization group method for quantum dynamics in complex systems

Jiajun Ren, Weitang Li, Tong Jiang +2 more

Abstract The simulations of spectroscopy and quantum dynamics are of vital importance to the understanding of the electronic processes in complex systems, including the radiative/radiationless electronic relaxation relevant for optical emission, charge/energy transfer in molecular aggregates related to carrier mobility in organic materials, as well as photovoltaic and thermoelectric conversion, light‐harvesting and spin transport, and so forth. In recent years, time‐dependent density matrix renormalization group (TD‐DMRG) has emerged as a general, numerically accurate and efficient method for high‐dimensional full‐quantum dynamics. This review will cover the fundamental algorithms of TD‐DMRG in the modern framework of matrix product states (MPS) and matrix product operators (MPO), including the basic algebra with respect to MPS and MPO, the novel time evolution schemes to propagate MPS, and the automated MPO construction algorithm to encode generic Hamiltonian. Most importantly, the proposed method can handle the mixed state density matrix at finite temperature, enabling quantum statistical description for molecular aggregates. We demonstrate the performance of TD‐DMRG by benchmarking with the current state‐of‐the‐art methods for simulating quantum dynamics of the spin‐boson model and the Frenkel–Holstein(–Peierls) model. As applications of TD‐DMRG to real‐world problems, we present theoretical investigations of carrier mobility and spectral function of rubrene crystal, and the radiationless decay rate of azulene with an anharmonic potential energy surface. Simulating Real-Time Molecular Electron Dynamics Efficiently Using the Time-Dependent Density Matrix Renormalization Group

Imam S. Wahyutama, Henrik R. Larsson

Compared to ground-state electronic structure optimizations, accurate simulations of molecular real-time electron dynamics are usually much more difficult to perform. To simulate electron dynamics, the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group (TDDMRG) has been shown to offer an attractive compromise between accuracy and cost. However, many simulation parameters significantly affect the quality and efficiency of a TDDMRG simulation. So far, it is unclear whether common wisdom from ground-state DMRG carries over to the TDDMRG, and a guideline on how to choose these parameters is missing. Here, in order to establish such a guideline, we investigate the convergence behavior of the main TDDMRG simulation parameters, such as time integrator, the choice of orbitals, and the choice of matrix-product-state representation for complex-valued nonsinglet states. In addition, we propose a method to select orbitals that are tailored to optimize the dynamics. Lastly, we showcase the TDDMRG by applying it to charge migration ionization dynamics in furfural, where we reveal a rapid conversion from an ionized state with a σ character to one with a π character within less than a femtosecond.
