Direct Observation of Coherent Two-Photon Medium Response Induced by Femtosecond Deep UV-Laser Pulses in Krypton

Resonant and near-resonant two-photon excitations with ultrashort laser pulses of forbidden atomic transitions give access to a wide class of nonlinear-optical processes such as two-photon absorption, stimulated Raman scattering, four-wave sum- and difference-frequency mixing. The latter has proofed to be a powerful tool for efficient femtosecond pulse generation in the VUV-spectral range [1]. Nevertheless, up to now only few experimental results have been obtained which allow the direct observation of the coherent dynamics in two-photon induced radiation-matter interactions (see experimental papers [2-5] and monograph [6]).

Direct Observation of Coherent Medium Response under the Condition of Two-Photon Excitation of Krypton by Femtosecond UV-Laser Pulses

Olaf Kittelmann, Jens Ringling, A. Nazarkin +2 more

Coherent Rabi oscillations and subsequent phase relaxation of excitation were observed under the condition of two-photon resonant interaction of Kr atoms with intense femtosecond 193 nm laser pulses. The coherent dynamics of the atomic transition exposed to an intense field was resolved using the technique of fs-pulse four-wave mixing with probe pulses significantly shorter than the pump pulses.

Coherent control of extreme uv absorption and photoemission by the simultaneous irradiation of ultrashort extreme uv and laser pulses

Kenichi L. Ishikawa, Katsumi Midorikawa

We present a theoretical study on the response of a hydrogen atom to the simultaneous irradiation of ultrashort extreme ultraviolet (xuv) and laser pulses. The calculation is based on the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation. The xuv photon energy is chosen to induce the $1s\ensuremath{-}2p$ transition. Our results indicate that we can transiently reduce the xuv absorption and change the atomic state within a few femtoseconds by injecting a femtosecond laser pulse. The laser-induced photoemission is affected by the addition of an xuv pulse and its yield depends much on the temporal overlap of the two pulses.
