Abstract

A semiclassical theory of superradiant scattering and propagating of light in a Bose-Einstein condensate of dilute atomic vapours is proposed. Choosing atomic states with definite momentum as a basis we derive a nonlinear Schrodinger equation. The solutions of the equation describe the temporal evolution of light intensity and of the populations of the coherent atomic states with different recoil moments.

A semiclassical theory of superradiant scattering of light from a Bose-Einstein condensate of a dilute atomic gas is proposed. Choosing atomic states with definite values of the momenta as a basis, we derive a nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Its solutions describe the evolution of the scattered light intensity and of the populations of the coherent atomic states with different recoil momenta.

A model of superradiant scattering of light from a Bose- Einstein condensate based on a semi-classical approach is proposed. Choosing coherent states with definite momentum as a basis of atomic states we derive a Maxwell-Bloch equations for the system considered and obtain their solutions that describe the temporal evolution of intensity of scattering light and population of the coherent atomic states.

Superradiant Rayleigh scattering of high-intensity short light pulses from a Bose-Einstein condensate of dilute atomic gases

N. I. Shamrov

Equations of a semiclassical model of superradiant Rayleigh scattering of high-intensity short light pulses from a Bose-Einstein condensate of dilute atomic gases are solved numerically taking into account the excitation of atoms by coherent Rayleigh radiation and their recoil in the backward direction. The evolution of the populations of coherent atomic states with a particular momentum is studied, and the pulse shape and the structure of the spectrum of such scattering are found in relation to the laser beam intensity and the recoil kinetic energy of atoms.

Amplification of light in a dilute-gas Bose-Einstein condensate

Evgenii Dmitrievich Trifonov, N. I. Shamrov

A semiclassical theory is proposed to describe the light amplification in a Bose—Einstein condensate of a dilute atomic gas observed in [1]. Atomic states with well-defined momenta are taken as a basis of wave functions to derive the Maxwell—Bloch equations for the model of a dilute gas of atoms interacting with electromagnetic field. The evolution of light intensity and populations of coherent atomic states with different recoil momenta is described by solving these equations. The solutions obtained are used to demonstrate theoretically the effects observed in [1].
