Thermal Multi-scale Entanglement Renormalization Ansatz for Variational Gibbs State Preparation

Troy J. Sewell, White, Christopher David, Brian G. Swingle

Many simulation tasks require that one first prepare a system's Gibbs state. We present a family of quantum circuits for variational preparation of thermal Gibbs states on a quantum computer; we call them the thermal multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (TMERA). TMERA circuits transform input qubits to wavepacket modes localized to varying length scales and approximate a systems Gibbs state as a mixed state of these modes. The TMERA is a based on the deep multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (DMERA); a TMERA modifies a ground-state DMERA circuit by preparing each input qubit as a mixed state. The excitation probabilities for input qubits serve as variational parameters used to target particular temperature Gibbs states. Since a TMERA is a special case of the product spectrum ansatz for thermal states, it is simple to prepare, analyze, and optimize. We benchmark the TMERA on the transverse field Ising model in one dimension and find that for $D=6$ it produces global fidelities $\mathcal F > 0.4$ for 512-site systems across all temperatures.

On the Entanglement Entropy in Gaussian cMERA

J. J. Fernández‐Melgarejo, J. Molina‐Vilaplana

Abstract The continuous Multi Scale Entanglement Renormalization Anstaz (cMERA) consists of a variational method which carries out a real space renormalization scheme on the wavefunctionals of quantum field theories. In this work we calculate the entanglement entropy of the half space for a free scalar theory through a Gaussian cMERA circuit. We obtain the correct entropy written in terms of the optimized cMERA variational parameter, the local density of disentanglers. Accordingly, using the entanglement entropy production per unit scale, we study local areas in the bulk of the tensor network in terms of the differential entanglement generated along the cMERA flow. This result spurs us to establish an explicit relation between the cMERA variational parameter and the radial component of a dual AdS geometry through the Ryu‐Takayanagi formula. Finally, we argue that the entanglement entropy for the half space can be written as an integral along the renormalization scale whose measure is given by the Fisher information metric of the cMERA circuit. Consequently, a straightforward relation between AdS geometry and the Fisher information metric is also established.

Renormalization Group and Critical Phenomena. I. Renormalization Group and the Kadanoff Scaling Picture

Kenneth Geddes Wilson

The Kadanoff theory of scaling near the critical point for an Ising ferromagnet is cast in differential form. The resulting differential equations are an example of the differential equations of the renormalization group. It is shown that the Widom-Kadanoff scaling laws arise naturally from these differential equations if the coefficients in the equations are analytic at the critical point. A generalization of the Kadanoff scaling picture involving an "irrelevant" variable is considered; in this case the scaling laws result from the renormalization-group equations only if the solution of the equations goes asymptotically to a fixed point.
