Linear regime of time-varying double resonance in a medium with Doppler-broadened spectral lines

A E Dmitriev, Oleg M. Parshkov

A time-varying regime of a double resonance in a system with a common upper level, with Doppler-broadened spectral lines, is described theoretically. The light field with the lower frequency (the signal) is assumed to be weak in comparison with that with the higher frequency (the pump). The nature of the interaction between the fields is determined substantially by the parameter n , which is the square root of the ratio of oscillator strengths in the pump and signal channels. At n > 0.5, and at sufficiently large distances, the resultant optical field is described as a superposition of the fields of a 2π pump pulse and an exponentially growing signal pulse of steady-state shape which is coupled with the pump pulse. The signal gain coefficient is described as a function of the pump frequency and the pump pulse energy by means of a probability integral of complex argument. At n < 0.5, the signal pulse undergoes a pronounced dispersive spreading with increasing distance traversed, and the rate of amplification of this pulse is lower than exponential. The shaping of the signal pulse is studied as a function of the detuning from resonance in the signal and pump channels.

Nonlinear effects in pulse propagation through Doppler-broadened closed-loop atomic media

Robert Fleischhaker, Jörg Evers

Nonlinear effects in pulse propagation through a medium consisting of four-level double-$\ensuremath{\Lambda}$-type systems are studied theoretically. We apply three continuous-wave driving fields and a pulsed probe field such that they form a closed interaction loop. Due to the closed loop and the finite frequency width of the probe pulses, the multiphoton resonance condition cannot be fulfilled, such that a time-dependent analysis is required. By identifying the different underlying physical processes we determine the parts of the solution relevant to calculate the linear and nonlinear response of the system. We find that the system can exhibit a strong intensity-dependent refractive index with small absorption over a range of several natural linewidths. For a realistic example we include Doppler and pressure broadening and calculate the nonlinear self-phase modulation in a gas cell with sodium vapor and argon buffer gas. We find that a self-phase modulation of $\ensuremath{\pi}$ is achieved after the propagation of a few centimeters through the medium while the absorption and pulse shape distortion in the corresponding spectral range is small.

Gas laser with a phase anisotropy in an axial magnetic field for arbitrary relative excitation of the active medium

А. Ч. Измайлов

A theoretical analysis is made of the characteristics of a single- and two-mode gas laser with an anisotropic resonator in an axial magnetostatic field with arbitrary relative excitation of the active medium for an atomic transition with total level momenta of 0 and 1. Using an example of a homogeneously broadened spectral line, it is shown that the results of calculations made to within terms cubic with respect to the electric field give a correct qualitative description of the characteristics of two-mode lasing.
