Abstract

We propose a simple and fast scheme to realize a controlled-NOT gate between two trapped ions using a resonant laser pulse. Our scheme allows the Rabi frequency of the laser field to be of the order of the vibrational frequency and thus the time required to complete the operation is greatly shortened, which is of importance in view of decoherence.

Quantum controlled-NOT gates with a single trapped ion

L. F. Wei, X. L. Lei

We show that, under certain conditions, the two-qubit controlled-NOT logic operations can be realized exactly using one laser pulse. The target qubit and the control qubit are encoded by the internal and external degrees of freedom of a single trapped ion. The multiquantum process of the interaction between the internal and external degrees of freedom of the ion is considered. This scheme neither requires the cooled ion in its vibrational ground state nor necessitates performance of the Lamb-Dicke approximation.

Efficient scheme for multipartite entanglement and quantum information processing with trapped ions

Wen‐Xing Yang, Zhiming Zhan, Jiahua Li

In this paper, based on the recent experiment by Roos et al. [Science 304, 1478 (2004)], a theoretical scheme is proposed to create the multipartite entanglement of many trapped ions and implement a two-qubit quantum phase gate between two ions in ion trap. In the scheme, the ion is illuminated by a single laser tuned to the first lower vibrational sideband. We also show that the scheme can be used to directly transfer information between two ions. The scheme has the advantage that it does not use the vibrational mode as the data bus and only requires a single resonant interaction. Thus the scheme is very simple and the quantum dynamics operation can be realized at a high speed. In view of the decoherence mechanism, the simplification for the entangled state preparation and experimental implementation of quantum logic operation may become crucial.

Quantum logic gates with two-level trapped ions beyond Lamb–Dicke limit

Zheng Xiao-Juan, Luo Yi-Min, Cai Jian-Wu

In the system with two two-level ions confined in a linear trap, this paper presents a simple scheme to realize the quantum phase gate (QPG) and the swap gate beyond the Lamb–Dicke (LD) limit. These two-qubit quantum logic gates only involve the internal states of two trapped ions. The scheme does not use the vibrational mode as the data bus and only requires a single resonant interaction of the ions with the lasers. Neither the LD approximation nor the auxiliary atomic level is needed in the proposed scheme. Thus the scheme is simple and the interaction time is very short, which is important in view of decoherence. The experimental feasibility for achieving this scheme is also discussed.

Fast quantum logic gates with trapped ions interacting with external laser and quantized cavity field beyond the Lamb-Dicke regime

Sharma, S S, Vidiella-Barranco, A

A scheme to implement quantum logic gates by manipulating trapped ions through interaction with monochromatic external laser field and quantized cavity field, beyond the Lamb-Dicke regime, is presented. Characteristic time, for implementing ionic state transitions using non-resont laser pulse or quantized cavity field, shows a sharp decline for large Lamb-Dicke parameter value of $\\eta_{L}=\\eta_{c}=0.2$, and is seen to decrease further with increase in number of initial state vibrational quanta $m$.

Speeding up conditional quantum logic of trapped ion qubits with overlapping pulses

Lachezar S. Simeonov, Peter A. Ivanov, Nikolay V. Vitanov

We introduce two types of two-qubit controlled-phase gates, which operate with trapped ions in a linear Paul trap. Each ion is addressed individually with two sequential bichromatic laser pulses, the two frequency components of which are tuned on exact resonance with the first blue and red vibrational sidebands of the qubit transition frequency. For suitably chosen pulse areas and relative laser phases the dependence on the phonon number vanishes and the net effect is a controlled-phase gate between the electronic qubit states. In contrast to earlier gates, in which the pulses addressing the two ions are separated in time, we use partly overlapping pulses, which make the present gates faster, e.g., by about 26% for rectangular and over 50% for sinusoidal pulses.
