Anomalous dephasing of optical transitions of a Pr3+ ion in Y2SiO5 crystal

Yu. V. Malyukin, N. L. Pogrebnyak, V. P. Seminozhenko

The temperature drops in the photon echo intensity have been studied for the first time in the low-symmetry impurity crystal Y2SiO5:Pr3+ in the temperature range 4.2–20 K on the resonance transitions 3P0–3H4 and 1D2–3H4 of the Pr3+ ion. It is shown that the obtained results can be interpreted by using the familiar mechanisms of dephasing of optical transitions in impurity ions.

Dichroic optical bistability in a nonlinear Fabry–Perot interferometer

M. I. Dykman, Georgiy G. Tarasov

It is shown that a new type of optical bistability may occur in a Fabry–Perot resonator containing a nongyrotropic cubic crystal. This instability is due to an anisotropy of the nonlinear resonance absorption in the crystal. The explicit conditions for the establishment of dichroic optical bistability are determined for cases of two-photon absorption and resonance absorption by reorientable impurity centers.

Off-resonant Raman quantum memory in impurity crystals: signal-to-noise ratio analysis

A D Berezhnoi, А. А. Калачев

The possibility of implementing an off-resonant Raman scheme of optical quantum memory on the basis of an ensemble of three-level atoms is investigated under the condition of equal polarisations of resonant transitions forming the Λ-scheme. The developed model is used to analyse the signal-to-noise ratio at the output of an optical quantum memory device in 143 Nd 3+ : Y 7 LiF 4 . It is shown that this ratio can significantly exceed unity for single-photon input pulses. The required values of the parameters can be obtained by using an impurity crystal in the form of a whispering-gallery mode ring resonator.
