Abstract

Abstract Secret key rate is a core performance indicator in implementing quantum key distribution, which directly determines the transmission rate of enciphered data. Here we demonstrate a high-key-rate quantum key distribution system over mature telecom components. The entire framework of quantum key distribution over these components is constructed. The high-rate low-noise Gaussian modulation of coherent states is realized by a classical electro-optic IQ modulator. High-baud low-intensity quantum signals are received by a commercial integrated coherent receiver under the shot-noise limit. A series of digital signal processing algorithms are proposed to achieve accurate signal recovery and key distillation. The system has yield a secret key rate of 10.37 Mbps, 1.61 Mbps, 337.82 kbps, and 58.06 kbps under the standard telecom fiber of 20 km, 50 km, 70 km, and 100 km, respectively. Our results represent the achieved highest secret key generation rate for quantum key distribution using continuous variables at a standard telecom wavelength. Moreover, it breaks the isolation between quantum communication and classical optical communication in terms of components, and opens the way to a high-speed and cost-effective formation of metropolitan quantum secure communication networks.

Abstract Quantum key distribution (QKD) is one quantum technology that can provide secure encryption keys for data transmission. The secret key rate (SKR) is a core performance indicator in QKD, which directly determines the transmission rate of enciphered data. Here, for the first time, we demonstrate a high-key-rate Gaussian-modulated continuous-variable QKD (CV-QKD) using telecom optical components. The framework of CV-QKD over these components is constructed. Specifically, the high-rate low-noise Gaussian modulation of coherent states is realized by a classical optical IQ modulator. High-baud low-intensity quantum signals are received by an integrated coherent receiver under the shot-noise limit. A series of digital signal processing algorithms are proposed to achieve accurate signal recovery and key distillation. The system can yield a high asymptotic SKR of 10.37 Mbps within 20 km standard telecom fiber, and the secure distance can exceed 100 km. This result confirms the feasibility of CV-QKD with state-of-the-art performance using telecom optical components. Besides, due to the ease of integrating these discrete components, it provides a high-performance and miniaturized QKD solution for the metropolitan quantum network.

High-rate discrete-modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution with composable security

Mingze Wu, Yan Pan, Junhui Li +8 more

Continuous-variable quantum key distribution holds the potential to generate high secret key rates, making it a prime candidate for high-rate metropolitan quantum network applications. However, despite these promising opportunities, the realization of high-rate continuous-variable quantum key distribution systems with composable security remains an elusive goal. Here, we report a discrete-modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution system with a composable secret key rate of 18.93 Mbps against collective attacks over a 25 km fiber channel. This record breaking rate is achieved through the probability shaped 16QAM-modulated protocol, which employs semidefinite programming to ensure its composable security. Furthermore, we have employed a fully digital and precise quantum signal processing technique to reduce excess noise to extremely low levels, thereby facilitating efficient broadband system operation. While ensuring low complexity and cost, our system achieves a performance advantage of over an order of magnitude compared to previous continuous-variable quantum key distribution systems, providing a promising solution for future deployment of quantum key distribution.

A high-rate continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) system based on high-order discrete modulation is experimentally investigated. With the help of the novel system scheme, effective digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms and advanced analytical security proof methods, the transmission results of 5.059 km, 10.314 km, 24.490 km, and 50.592 km are achieved for 1 GBaud optimized quantum signals. Correspondingly, the asymptotic secret key rates (SKRs) are 292.185 Mbps, 156.246 Mbps, 50.491 Mbps, and 7.495 Mbps for discrete Gaussian (DG) 64QAM, and 328.297 Mbps, 176.089 Mbps, 51.304 Mbps, and 9.193 Mbps for DG 256QAM, respectively. Under the same parameters, the achieved SKRs of DG 256QAM is almost same as ideal Gaussian modulation. In this case, the demonstrated high-rate discrete-modulated CV-QKD system has the application potential for high-speed security communication under tens of kilometers.

High-performance long-distance discrete-modulation continuous-variable quantum key distribution

Yan Feng Tian, Yu Zhang, Shuaishuai Liu +4 more

We experimentally demonstrate a high-rate discretely modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution over 80-km standard single-mode fiber with a 2.5 Gbaud, 16-symbol, two-ring constellation. With the help of well-designed digital signal processing algorithms, the excess noise of the system can be effectively suppressed. The achieved secret key rates are 49.02 Mbits/s, 11.86 Mbits/s, and 2.11 Mbits/s over 25-km, 50-km, and 80-km optical fiber, respectively, and achieve 67.4%, 70.0%, and 66.5% of the secret key rate performance of a Gaussian-modulated protocol. Our work shows that it is feasible to build a high-performance, long-distance continuous-variable quantum key distribution system with only a small constellation size.

Gigabit-rate quantum key distribution on integrated photonic chips

Si Qi Ng, Florian Kanitschar, Gong Zhang +1 more

Quantum key distribution (QKD) provides information-theoretic security based on the laws of quantum mechanics, offering resistance to future computational threats, including quantum computers. While QKD technology shows great promise, its widespread adoption depends heavily on achieving both high performance and system-level practicality. In this work, we report an integrated silicon photonics-based QKD system that achieves a secret key rate of 1.213Gbits −1 , with composable security and finite-size analysis, over a metropolitan distance of 10 km with polarization multiplexing. Our contributions are twofold. First, at the quantum optical layer, we develop an on-chip quantum transmitter and receiver that operate at 40 Gbaud at room temperature, featuring high-performance balanced homodyne detection using low-noise amplifiers with off-the-shelf RF components. Second, we implement a discrete-modulated continuous variable (DM CV) QKD protocol that simplifies hardware requirements and leverages standard telecommunication components, and design a polar-code-based information reconciliation algorithm specifically optimized for DM CV QKD and amenable to real-time implementation. Our results demonstrate a cost-effective QKD solution that achieves high key rates through integrated photonics operating at room temperature with off-the-shelf RF components and digital signal processing for robust operation. We anticipate that this research will pave the way for large-scale quantum secure networks.
