Domination for quantum Markov semigroups (Research on structure of operators by order and related topics)

Abstract

A well-known theorem of W. Arveson states that a completely positive (CP) map dominated (difference is CP) by a given CP map is described through a positive contraction in the commutant of the homomorphism of Stinespring representation. This contraction plays the role of Radon-Nikodym derivative of measure theory. We look at implications of this to one parameter semigroups of unital completely positive maps, known as quantum Markov semigroups. We focus our attention to quantum Markov semigroups of B(H), the algebra of all bounded operators on a Hilbert space. These semigroups can be dilated to semigroups of unital endomorphisms (E₀-semigroups) of B(K) for some other Hilbert space K. Here we see that dominated CP semigroups dilate to dominated semigroups of the dilation. Moreover at the level of Eo-semigroups the dominated CP semigroups are described through positive contractive local cocycles, which are really families of contractions of 'Radon-Nikodym derivatives' mentioned above. We analyze the structure for quantum semigroups with bounded generators.

Radon–Nikodym derivatives of quantum operations

Maxim Raginsky

Given a completely positive (CP) map T, there is a theorem of the Radon–Nikodym type [W. B. Arveson, Acta Math. 123, 141 (1969); V. P. Belavkin and P. Staszewski, Rep. Math. Phys. 24, 49 (1986)] that completely characterizes all CP maps S such that T−S is also a CP map. This theorem is reviewed, and several alternative formulations are given along the way. We then use the Radon–Nikodym formalism to study the structure of order intervals of quantum operations, as well as a certain one-to-one correspondence between CP maps and positive operators, already fruitfully exploited in many quantum information-theoretic treatments. We also comment on how the Radon–Nikodym theorem can be used to derive norm estimates for differences of CP maps in general, and of quantum operations in particular.

Dilation of Markovian cocycles on a von Neumann algebra

Debashish Goswami, J. Martin Lindsay, Kalyan B. Sinha +1 more

Abstract. We consider normal Markovian cocycles on a von Neumann al-gebra which are adapted to a Fock filtration. Every such cocycle k which is Markov-regular and consists of completely positive contractions is realised as a conditioned ∗-homomorphic cocycle. This amounts to a stochastic generalisa-tion of a recent dilation result for norm-continuous normal completely positive contraction semigroups. To achieve this stochastic dilation we use the fact that k is governed by a quantum stochastic differential equation whose coef-ficient matrix has a specific structure, and extend a technique for obtaining stochastic flow generators from Markov semigroup generators, to the context of cocycles. Number/exchange-free dilatability is seen to be related to locality in the case where the cocycle is a Markovian semigroup. In the same spirit unitary dilations of Markov-regular contraction cocycles on a Hilbert space are also described. The paper ends with a discussion of connections with measure-valued diffusion.

Spatial Markov Semigroups Admit Hudson-Parthasarathy Dilations

Universit&, Michael Skeide, #224 +1 more

We present, for the first time, the result (from 2008) that (normal, strongly continuous) Markov semigroups on B(G) (G a separable Hilbert space) admit a Hudson-Parthasarathy dilation (that is, a dilation to a cocycle perturbation of a noise) if and only if the Markov semigroup is spatial (that is, if it dominates an elementary CP-semigroup).The proof is by general abstract nonsense (taken from Arveson's classification of E 0 -semigroups on B(H) by Arveson systems up to cocycle conjugacy) and not, as usual, by constructing the cocycle as a solution of a quantum stochastic differential equation in the sense of Hudson and Parthasarathy. All other results that make similar statements (especially, [Mem.Amer.Math.Soc.240 (2016), vi+126 pages, arXiv:0901.1798]) for more general C * -algebras) have been proved later by suitable adaptations of the methods exposed here.(They use Hilbert module techniques, which we carefully avoid here in order to make the result available without any appeal to Hilbert modules.)

Quantum extensions of dynamical systems and of Markov semigroups

Ivan Bardet

We investigate some particular completely positive maps which admit a stable commutative Von Neumann subalgebra. The restriction of such maps to the stable algebra is then a Markov operator. In the first part of this article, we propose a recipe in order to find a quantum extension of a given Markov operator in the above sense. We show that the existence of such an extension is linked with the existence of a special form of dilation for the Markov operator studied by Attal in \cite{Att1}, reducing the problem to the extension of dynamical system. We then apply our method to the same problem in continuous time, proving the existence of a quantum extension for Lévy processes. In the second part of this article, we focus on the case where the commutative algebra is isomorphic to $\Acal=l^\infty(1,...,N)$ with $N$ either finite or infinite. We propose a classification of the CP maps leaving $\Acal$ stable, producing physical examples of each classes.

Stochastic Dilation of Symmetric Completely Positive Semigroups

Debashish Goswami, Kalyan B. Sinha

This is a continuation of the study of the theory of quantum stochastic dilation of completely positive semigroups on a von Neumann or $C^*$ algebra, here with unbounded generators. The additional assumption of symmetry with respect to a semifinite trace allows the use of the Hilbert space techniques, while the covariance gives rise to better handle on domains. An Evans-Hudson flow is obtained, dilating the given semigroup.

Dilation of a class of quantum dynamical semigroups

Debashish Goswami, Kalyan B. Sinha

Hudson-Parthasarathy (H-P) type quantum stochastic dilation of a class of C 0 semigroups of completely positive maps ( quantum dynamical or Markov semigroups) on a von Neumann or C * algebra, with unbounded generators, is constructed under some assumptions on the semigroup and its generator. The assumption of symmetry with respect to a semifinite trace allows the use of Hilbert space techniques, while that of covariance with respect to an action of a Lie group on the algebra gives a better control on the domain of the generator.A dilation of the dynamical semigroup is obtained, under some further assumptions on the domain of the generator, with the help of a conjugation by a unitary quantum stochastic process satisfying Hudson-Parthasarathy equation in Fock space.
