Collapse and revival phenomenon in the evolution of a resonant field in a Kerr-like medium

G. S. Agarwal, Ravinder Rupchand Puri

A quantum theory of the propagation of a single-mode resonant field through a Kerr-like medium is given. Numerical studies show the existence of the quantum collapses and revivals in the otherwise periodic exchange of energy between the field and the atomic oscillator. Approximate analytical methods are developed to explain the numerical results for the case of weak nonlinearity of the Kerr medium. For large nonlinearity, the correspondence with the Jaynes-Cummings model is discussed.

Semiclassical theory of gaseous dipolar media with application to the gas laser

A. S. Acampora, P. Serafim

A new semiclassical model of the active medium of a gas laser and a description of its interaction with a classical electromagnetic field are reported. The model is based upon an exact microscopic formulation of the density of the active medium in a suitably defined semiclassical state space. Field-medium interaction mechanisms are studied by coupling the equation describing the dynamics of this density with Maxwell's field equations and the Schr\"odinger wave equation. Coupled stochastic nonlinear equations are formulated and quasilinear techniques are employed to effect their solutions. Wave-dipole correlations, the dominant nonlinearity, is shown to effect stability, produce the phenomena of hole burning, mode coupling, and frequency conversion, and to provide the mechanism whereby nonresonant pump field energy is converted into resonant laser oscillations.

Spatial effects in nonlinear resonant reflection from the boundary of a dense semi-infinite two-level medium: normal incidence

Victor A Malyshev, Enrique Conejero Jarque

We study the nonlinear resonant reflection of an intense linearly polarized plane wave from a vacuum-dense two-level-medium interface under normal-incidence conditions. A domain of parameters is specially selected for which one needs to take into account strong atom–field coupling, which results in the appearance of a gap in the spectrum of mixed states (polaritons). For the linear problem, the presence of the gap causes a strong reflection of an incident signal with a frequency within the gap. The near-zone dipole–dipole interaction is also included within the framework of the local-field approach. By performing the time-domain analysis of the reflectivity at different spectral points, we observe certain peculiarities, such as the possibility of a steady-state high-contrast optical switching with low-level operation, stable and unstable hysteresis loops, and an auto-oscillation regime of reflectivity for a certain range of the parameters driving the evolution of the system.
