Determination of cross sections of excitation transfer between the fine-structure components of Cs(72P), Rb(62P) and Rb(72P) induced by collisions with rare-gas atoms

Pamela N. Münster, J Marek

Cross sections of excitation transfer between the fine-structure sublevels of Cs(7 2 P), Rb(6 2 P) and Rb(7 2 P) induced by collisions with rare-gas atoms have been determined from the time dependence of the sensitised fluorescence. The Cs and Rb atoms, contained in absorption cells filled with inert gases at different pressures, were excited using a pulsed dye laser pumped by a nitrogen laser. The fluorescence was observed time resolved employing a photon counting technique. The use of a two-level approximation allowed the Maxwellian (velocity) averaged transfer cross sections to be calculated. Comparison of the cross section values determined in this work with the values quoted by other authors shows good consistency in the case of Rb 6 2 P inert-gas collisions while in the case of Cs 7 2 P inert-gas collisions there are some discrepancies. Rb 7 2 P excitation transfer has not been dealt with before.

Excitation Transfer Process Rb(7D)+Na(3S) Collisions

Yifan Shen

The observation of a heteronuclear reverse energy pooling process is reported. The cross sections for the collision processes Rb(7 D )+Na(3 S )→Rb(5 P )+Na(3 P ) have been measured. In the experiment the rubidium atoms were excited in two steps to the 7 D _ 3/2 state. A double-modulation technique has been used to select the fluorescence contributions at the Na(3 P_j ) exit channels due only to the above reactions. The ground state sodium atom density was measured by the absorption of line from a Na hollow-cathode lamp. The measured density and fluorescence intensities have been used to obtain reverse energy pooling rate coefficients. The contribution to the rate coefficients from other processes is discussed.
