Demonstration of a coexistence scheme between polarization-entangled QKD and classical data channels

Florian Hipp, Michael Hentschel, Slaviša Aleksić +2 more

Incorporating single photon links used for quantum communication applications like quantum key distribution is a challenging task. Direct contamination from the strong classical signal and induced Raman scattering easily obscures the weak quantum signal. Generating entangled photons in the O-band might allow the coexistence of classical and quantum signals. We present results demonstrating the feasibility of transmitting entangled photons and strong classical communication signals over the same fiber.

Adapting communication networks to the quantum safe era: lessons learned in the coexistence of polarization-entangled QKD and classical channels

Ane Sanz, Asier Atutxa, David Franco +2 more

The growth of communication networks and the innovation in technology have driven a rising need for advanced security solutions. With the rise of quantum technologies, traditional communication networks could potentially become vulnerable, posing challenges for academia, research, and industry. Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) has emerged as a promising quantum-safe solution, but its integration into existing infrastructures requires extensive study due to challenges in real-world scenarios. This paper presents an innovative quantum-safe infrastructure deployment and an in-depth analysis of co-propagation, using polarization-entangled QKD in the C-band, coexisting with classical data at 100 Gbps via Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM), and employing production-ready equipment within a real infrastructure. Results validate the coexistence of data and quantum channels within the same fibers, demonstrating the adaptability of traditional networks toward future quantum-safe ecosystems. In addition, the paper provides insights and lessons learned for similar deployments.

Changes of quantum state of polarization in coexistence scheme of quantum-classical signal

Junwen Luo, Lei Shi, Yunxia Li +1 more

State of polarization(SOP) of single photon is the information carrier of polarization encoding BB84 protocol. SOP of quantum must be interrupted when quantum key distribution(QKD) propagates with classical signal in the same fiber. Coexistence schemes of quantum-classical signal based on two-channel and four-channel have been built respectively on Optisystem in this paper. The influence on SOP of quantum signal in BB84 protocol from different classical optical signal channel has been analyzed and compared by Stokes vector method and Poincare sphere method. SOP of 100 photons in QKD have been simulated. The results show that more channels will increase the bit error rate of QKD, and this paper has described the SOP changes well in coexistence scheme of quantum-classical signal based on wavelength division multiplexing.
