Long Time Behaviour of a Local Perturbation in the Isotropic XY Chain Under Periodic Forcing

Abstract

We study the isotropic XY quantum spin chain with a time-periodic transverse magnetic field acting on a single site. The asymptotic dynamics is described by a highly resonant Floquet–Schrödinger equation, for which we show the existence of a periodic solution if the forcing frequency is away from a discrete set of resonances. This in turn implies the state of the quantum spin chain to be asymptotically a periodic function synchronised with the forcing, also at arbitrarily low non-resonant frequencies. The behaviour at the resonances remains a challenging open problem.

Periodic Driving of an Impurity in the Isotropic XY Chain

Livia Corsi, Giuseppe Genovese

We study the isotropic XY chain with a transverse magnetic field acting on a single site and analyse the long time behaviour of the time-dependent state of the system when a periodic perturbation drives the impurity. We find that for high frequencies the state approaches a periodic orbit synchronised with the forcing and provide the explicit rate of convergence to the asymptotics.

Periodic Dynamics at Low Frequency of a Local Perturbation in the Isotropic XY Model

Livia Corsi, Giuseppe Genovese

We continue our study on the isotropic XY chain with a time-periodic transverse magnetic field acting on a single site. Under a suitable technical assumption on the external forcing, we show the state to be asymptotically a periodic function synchronised with the forcing for any frequency. For small frequencies our result is valid if the amplitude of the transverse field is small.

Out-of-equilibrium phase transitions induced by Floquet resonances in a periodically quench-driven XY spin chain

Sergio Enrique Tapias Arze, Pieter W. Claeys, Isaac Pérez Castillo +1 more

We consider the dynamics of an XY spin chain subjected to an external transverse field which is periodically quenched between two values. By deriving an exact expression of the Floquet Hamiltonian for this out-of-equilibrium protocol with arbitrary driving frequencies, we show how, after an unfolding of the Floquet spectrum, the parameter space of the system is characterized by alternations between local and non-local regions, corresponding respectively to the absence and presence of Floquet resonances. The boundary lines between regions are obtained analytically from avoided crossings in the Floquet quasi-energies and are observable as phase transitions in the synchronized state. The transient behaviour of dynamical averages of local observables similarly undergoes a transition, showing either a rapid convergence towards the synchronized state in the local regime, or a rather slow one exhibiting persistent oscillations in the non-local regime, where explicit decay coefficients are presented.

Reservoir-induced stabilisation of a periodically driven classical spin chain: local vs. global relaxation

Thomas Veness, Kay Brandner

Floquet theory is an indispensable tool for analysing periodically-driven quantum many-body systems. Although it does not universally extend to classical systems, some of its methodologies can be adopted in the presence of well-separated timescales. Here we use these tools to investigate the stroboscopic behaviours of a classical spin chain that is driven by a periodic magnetic field and coupled to a thermal reservoir. We detail and expand our previous work: we investigate the significance of higher-order corrections to the classical Floquet-Magnus expansion in both the high- and low-frequency regimes; explicitly probe the evolution the dynamics of the reservoir; and further explore how the driven system synchronises with the applied field at low frequencies. In line with our earlier results, we find that the high-frequency regime is characterised by a local Floquet-Gibbs ensemble with the reservoir acting as a nearly-reversible heatsink. At low frequencies, the driven system rapidly enters a synchronised state, which can only be fully described in a global picture accounting for the concurrent relaxation of the reservoir in a fictitious magnetic field arising from the drive. We highlight how the evolving nature of the reservoir may still be incorporated in a local picture by introducing an effective temperature. Finally, we argue that dissipative equations of motion for periodically-driven many-body systems, at least at intermediate frequencies, must generically be non-Markovian.

A Soluble Quasi-Crystalline Magnetic Model: The XY Quantum Spin Chain

J. M. Luck, Theo M. Nieuwenhuizen

We consider the quantum XY spin chain with quasi-periodic two-valued exchange couplings and a uniform transverse field. The equivalence of the system with a free fermionic model permits a detailed analysis of its thermodynamics. The zero-temperature magnetization is a Cantor function of the applied field. The zero-field specific heat and susceptibility have a power-law behaviour at low temperature, modulated by periodic amplitudes. The critical exponents interpolate continuously between those of the periodic and of the random model.
