Lateral and rotary light-drag enhancement in a vee+ladder configuration comprising a Rydberg state

Abstract

Abstract The lateral and rotary light-drag effects in a four-level vee+ladder configuration comprising a Rydberg state as the topmost level is theoretically investigated. We found that it is difficult to obtain enhanced lateral and rotary light drags accompanied by suppressed absorption in the three-level vee and ladder configurations. However, in the proposed four-level vee+ladder configuration both lateral and rotary light drags are significantly enhanced as well as suppressing the absorption of the weak probe field via electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). The profound impacts of the intensity of the controlling fields on both the lateral and rotary light drags are discussed. It is demonstrated that intensifying the controlling fields leads to enhancing the lateral and rotary light-drag effects accompanied by negligible probe field absorption. Furthermore, it is shown that light is dragged opposite of the direction of the host medium motion while the superluminal light propagation dominates. Nevertheless, the light is dragged along the same direction of the host medium motion in the subluminal propagation condition. In addition, we present the real quantities of all the parameters used in this study for future empirical investigations.

Theoretical study of coherent optical phenomena in a three lasers driven four-level ladder-type system involving a Rydberg state

Rohit Hazra, Md. Mabud Hossain

Abstract A comparative theoretical study of two-photon electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), absorption (EIA) and three-photon electromagnetically induced transparency (TPEIT), absorption (TPEIA) and their associated dispersion and group index profiles are presented by using a four-level ladder-type system of both stationary and moving 85 Rb Rydberg atoms. We have observed EIT, EIA and their respective positive and negative dispersive slopes under two-photon conditions, while the TPEIT, TPEIA signals and the respective multiple positive and negative dispersive slopes at around zero detuning of the probe field are observed under the three-photon conditions. It is found that the control and manipulation of the coherent optical responses under three-photon conditions are much richer than the two-photon conditions. The group index profiles related to the dispersion of the medium have been studied under both two- and three-photon conditions to compare and explain the optical switching between the subluminal and superluminal modes of propagation for both stationary and moving atomic medium. The influence of the ‘pump’ Rabi frequency on the group index has also been investigated to illustrate the action of optical switching. Finally, the existence of the four-wave mixing (FWM) process due to the action of three optical fields in the EIT medium is also discussed.

Enhanced photon drag in closed-loop quantum systems

Seyedeh Hamideh Kazemi, Mohammad Mahmoudi

Abstract In recent years, photon drag has attracted enormous attention owing to both fundamental and practical interests. In this paper, we investigate dragging effect in quantum systems with closed-loop interaction. First, we demonstrate an enhanced photon drag in a moving atomic medium with a three-level Λ-type structure. By incorporating the interference of spontaneous emissions, the properties of the atomic medium can be easily controlled by the relative phase of applied fields so that a large group index along with a transparency or even a gain can be achieved. As the photon drag is proportional to the group index, the enhancement can be also found in the dragging of light. Such enhanced dragging effect can be applied for the efficient modulators of light, position control, and the detection of slow motion. We then investigate the Fresnel’s light drag effect in another closed-loop structure, i.e. chiral molecules with a cyclic three-level Δ-type configuration, and show that left- and right-handed chiral molecules exhibit different dragging effects. This provides a possible way to probe the molecular chirality, which may find applications in the sorting and separation of chiral molecules.

Light drag in an optomechanical system

Hazrat Ali, Nadia Boutabba, Amjad Sohail

Abstract Light dragging refers to the change in the path of light passing through a moving medium. This effect enables accurate detection of very slow speeds of light, which have prominent applications in state transfer, quantum gate operations, and quantum memory implementations. Here, to the best of our knowledge, we demonstrate the existence of the light-dragging effect in an optomechanical system (OMS) for the first time. The origin of this key factor arises from the nonlinear effects linked to optomechanical-induced transparency (OMIT). Hence, we observe prominent effects in the group and refractive indices profile spectra related to optomechanical parameters such as the decay rate of the cavity field, the mirror’s damping momentum rate, and mechanical frequency. We find that lateral light drag depends on the detuning by altering the amplitude and direction of the translational velocity. This allowed us to change the light’s propagation through the optomechanical cavity from superluminal to subluminal and vice versa by modifying the probe’s detuning. The ability to manipulate and control the light drag through an optomechanical system might be useful in designing novel optical devices and systems with enhanced performance.

Electromagnetically induced transparency with controlled van der Waals interaction

Huai‐Zhi Wu, Meng-Meng Bian, Li-Tuo Shen +3 more

We study the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) effect with two individually addressed four-level Rydberg atoms subjected to the interatomic van der Waals interaction. We derive an effectively atomic Raman transition model where two ladders of the usual Rydberg EIT setting terminating at the same upper Rydberg level of long radiative lifetime are turned into a Rydberg EIT $\ensuremath{\lambda}$ setup via two-photon transitions, leaving the middle levels of each ladder largely detuned from the coupling and probe laser beams. It can hence overcome the limits of applications for EIT with atoms of the ladder-type level configuration involving a strongly decaying intermediate state by inducing coherence between two ground states. By probing one of the atoms, we observe four doublets of absorption induced by the Autler-Townes splitting and the van der Waals interaction. In particular, we find that the location of the EIT center remains unchanged compared to the interatomic-interaction-free case, which demonstrates that the interference among the multiple transition channels is basically destructive. The EIT with controlled Rydberg-Rydberg interaction among a few atoms provides a versatile tool for engineering the propagation dynamics of light.

Subluminal and superluminal light pulse propagation under external magnetic field in a vee-type three-level atomic medium

Thai Doan Thanh, Nguyễn Tuấn Anh, Nguyen Thi Thu Hien +4 more

In this work, we investigate subluminal and superluminal light propagation in a vee-type three-level atomic medium under an external magnetic field. The dispersion and absorption behaviors are studied for the cases of absence and presence of a magnetic field. It is found that under an electromagnetically induced transparency condition, the light pulse can be switched between subluminal and superluminal propagation by ON-OFF switching of the magnetic field. Finally, the transient response of the medium is discussed, which shows that the considered scheme has potential applications in magneto-optic switching devices. Interplay of electromagnetically induced transparency and Doppler broadening in hot atomic vapors

Lida Zhang, Nina Stiesdal, Hannes Busche +3 more

Abstract For multi-level systems in hot atomic vapors the interplay between the Doppler shift due to atomic motion and the wavenumber mismatch between driving laser fields strongly influences transmission and absorption properties of the atomic medium. In a three-level atomic ladder-system, Doppler broadening limits the visibility of electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT) when the probe and control fields are co-propagating, while EIT is recovered under the opposite condition of counter-propagating geometry and k p < k c , with k p and k c being the wavenumbers of the probe and control fields, respectively. This effect has been studied and experimentally demonstrated as an efficient mechanism to realize non-reciprocal probe light transmission, which may enable applications as magnetic-field free optical isolators. Here, we describe the basics of this effect and discuss a simple picture for the underlying mechanism. We illustrate how the non-reciprocity scales with wavelength mismatch and show how to experimentally demonstrate the effect in a simple Rydberg-EIT system using thermal Rubidium atoms.
