Abstract

Self-healing of an Airy beam during propagation is of fundamental interest and also promises important applications. Despite many studies of Airy beams in the quantum regime, it is unclear whether an Airy beam only including a single photon can heal after passing an obstacle because the photon may be blocked. Here we experimentally observe self-healing of a heralded single-photon Airy beam. Our observation implies that an Airy wave packet is robust against obstacle caused distortion and can restore even at the single-photon level.

Observation of Self-Healing in Single-Photon Space-Time Wave Packets

Bryan L. Turo, Bahaa E. A. Saleh, Ayman F. Abouraddy

We demonstrate experimentally the self-healing of spatiotemporally structured single-photon wave packets. After traversing an opaque obstruction, the single-photon spatial profile (from an entangled-photon pair) is rapidly reconstituted, which may be useful for resilient quantum communication.

Spatiotemporal Single-Photon Airy Bullets

Jianmin Wang, Ying Zuo, Xingchang Wang +3 more

Uninhibited control of the complex spatiotemporal quantum wave function of a single photon has so far remained elusive even though it can dramatically increase the encoding flexibility and thus the information capacity of a photonic quantum link. By fusing temporal waveform generation in an atomic ensemble and spatial single-photon shaping, we hereby demonstrate for the first time complete spatiotemporal control of a propagation invariant (2+1)D Airy single-photon optical bullet. These correlated photons are not only self-accelerating and impervious to spreading as their classical counterparts, but can be concealed and revealed in the presence of strong classical stray light.

Self-healing of multipartite entanglement in optical quantum networks

Xutong Wang, Jing Wen Fu, Shengshuai Liu +2 more

Multipartite entanglement serves as an essential resource for constructing quantum networks and makes it possible to realize multi-user quantum information protocols outperforming their classical counterparts. Unfortunately, multipartite entanglement is fragile when distributed in complex environments. Therefore, it is urgent to address the issue of multipartite entanglement decoherence caused by complex environments. Here we demonstrate the self-healing of multipartite continuous-variable (CV) entanglement after an obstruction. In our experiment, the tripartite entanglement destroyed by the obstruction-introduced noise and loss can self-heal after free-space propagation of a certain distance due to the self-healing property of a Bessel–Gaussian (BG) beam. We show that the BG beam provides a more robust mode basis for free-space CV quantum entanglement distribution than the widely used fundamental Gaussian beam under similar conditions. In addition, we also demonstrate the self-healing of five sets of tripartite entanglement and 10 sets of bipartite entanglement in orbital-angular-momentum-multiplexed optical quantum networks. Our results pave the way for constructing obstruction-tolerant high-capacity CV optical quantum networks.

Coherent forward scattering of a single photon wave packet in a resonant medium

R. N. Shakhmuratov, Farit G. Vagizov, J. Odeurs +1 more

The propagation of a single photon wave packet in a thick resonant medium was studied theoretically and experimentally. The well-known acceleration of wave packet decay was observed upon wave packet exiting from a medium with single resonant absorption line. It was found that in a medium with two closely spaced absorption lines, the restoration of the photon wave packet is observed after the acceleration of decay.

Spatially entangled Airy photons

Ohad Lib, Yaron Bromberg

Over the past decade, Airy beams have been the subject of extensive research, leading to new physical insights and various applications. In this Letter, we extend the concept of Airy beams to the quantum domain. We generate entangled photons in a superposition of two-photon Airy states via spontaneous parametric down conversion, pumped by a classical Airy beam. We show that the entangled Airy photons preserve the intriguing properties of classical Airy beams, such as free acceleration and reduced diffraction, while exhibiting non-classical anti-correlations. Finally, we discuss the advantages offered by entangled Airy photons for high-dimensional free-space quantum communications.

Quantum Airy photons

Stephanie Maruca, Santosh Kumar, Yong Meng Sua +3 more

Abstract With exotic propagation properties, optical Airy beams have been well studied for innovative applications in communications, biomedical imaging, micromachining, and so on. Here we extend those studies to the quantum domain, creating quantum correlated photons in finite-energy Airy transverse modes via spontaneous parametric down conversion and subsequential spatial light modulation. Through two-photon coincidence measurements, we verify their Airy spatial wavefunctions, propagation along a parabolic trajectory, and that the spatial modulation does not introduce any observable degradation of quantum correlation between the photons. These results suggest the feasibility of using spatially structured photons for practically advantageous quantum applications.
